Syfy President: "'MST3K" Is One-Note; Did You Ever Watch More Than 15/20 Minutes?"

I should have known that Dave Howe, Syfy President, was cut from the same cloth as his predecessor, Bonnie Hammer. All was typical corporate speak (count the 'you knows' in this article, BTW), but then you get near the end of the conference call when this question is asked.

I can't argue with that. MST3K was a one trick pony and it did get old pretty fast.

But WRESTLING, now. WRESTLING isn't one-note anything, and it's just the kind of SyFy we're looking for, you betcha.

I liked the Joel years more than the Mike years, but I still, for the most part, watched the whole show. The Turkey Day marathons were great...

When I read the thread title, I thought that it had come from Bonnie ("Crackers DO Matter, Bonnie!) ... glad/sad to see that I wasn't that far off.

I think they would be worried that MST3K would come back and do a show of the SyFy movies!

Yup, I agree as well. I want Syfy to present programming that is interesting. They've done a great job in the last few years, with Eureka, Battlestar Galactica, Warehouse 13, Tin Man, Alice, etc.

I STILL rewatch MST3K episodes. Yes, the ENTIRE episodes, Dave Howe. I've got a DVD library of the entire series (or, as close as I've been able to gather... it's not complete yet, but it's close.)

I agree with him, except I'd change "15 or 20 minutes" to "1 or 2 seconds".

    Never found it that funny.

"It’s one of those kind of one-note amusing things which I’m not sure is sustainable for any length of time or any period of time...." Nope. Definitely not sustainable. Definitely not for 10+ seasons or anything. Nope. And forget about getting people to spend money or time on this series. Not a chance.

No, I think they'd be afraid that the movies that MST3K riff on would be BETTER than the movies that Syfy currently shows!

Same for me. There are some episodes that fell flat. But there are some that were excellent--and if you enjoyed them, you would do a disservice by watching only part of an ep.

The real reason they do not want to bring it back is that most of the "first run" movies they show are better suited for MST3K than for watching as a regular movie.

I'd watch it for at least 15 minutes, and that would be at least 15 minutes more than I watch SyFy now.

Are the shows ever re-aired anytime anywhere?

Unfortunately not. Many are available on Rhino and ShoutFactory DVDs; the rest are available through the Digital Archive Project on the internet.

I own "Manos: The Hands of Fate" on VHS!

I watched every minute of (almost) every episode of MST3k ... back to when it was on Comedy Central.

That's what I think too. The history does not match this dismissal. I have about 75% of the shows on DVD, maybe more. Most of them are more watchable than what is on Syfy on Saturdays. Of course, that's not saying much, and leaving the "bar" awfully low.

    Awfully, that is...

Howe's comment reminds me of the time some reporter said to Bonnie Hammer at a press conference "You don't actually expect us to swallow that, do you?"

He's babbling foolishly. He's saying what he thinks his higher ups want him to say and it's full of holes.

Laughable and sad at the same time.

As mentioned above, Mistie had PLENTY of fans. Enough where when it lost its slot on its previous cable network, SciFiChannel snapped it up. Yeah. Sure. They grabbed the show because it was nothing.
