Hi, I have a Tivo HD (Series 3) 1gb and a Tivo HD with THX with a 250gb drive. I'd like to swap the 1gb to the box with THX and vice versa. Will this work with a simple hard drive swap or is there different software on the THX version? I don't care about losing recorded content.

    Thanks in advance!

It won't work—without a complete erase of both machines. Why not buy a new (larger) drive and clone/expand it from the 250gb? You should be able to get a 1TB HDD for $50-70.

That's not the answer I was hoping for. I'm an IT guy but not a programmer and I get nervous screwing around with Tivo hard drive images.

    Thanks for the advice!

Look through this thread. I'd suggest #2.... "Replace the built-in 160GB drive with a 1.0 TB model (157 HD hours)"

You don't need programming skills as it's all been done for you. Just a few small tools to remove the drive, and then tap a SATA connection on a PC.

It's a relatively straightforward task and there's lots of help on the forum if you run into an obstacle.

Great, thanks! What is the best 1TB hard drive to use these days?

Before getting a 1TB drive, be advised that with new developments, the capacity of the Tivo HD has been increased to 2 TB with a single 2 TB hard drive. To be clear though, this is only with the Tivo HD and not for the Original S3.

There is at least one online vendor who sells the pre-imaged 2G drive for the old S3, garantees that the Tivo will recognize it. He claims that he has special tools to make this possible. His price for the high performance WD AVGP for $190. He goes by DVR_DUDE

I think 1Gb should be enough for me. That's what I have on my current Dishnetwork DVR and it's always been sufficient. Maybe 1.5Gb if there isn't much of a price difference.

    So what drives are recommended?

Read the upgrade thread.. it lists what drives work in which Tivos.

Also, is your Dishnetwork DVR HD? If not, 1 GB might not be enough if you plan on recording HD.

From what I've read, you might as well put in a 2gb drive, since the cost of hard drives is so low.
