Swapping out a SD DTivo for an HR10-250 - is it allowed? Any fees/concerns?

    i still hate the lockup and bong of the todo list...freezes and cant do anything or it just shifts around mindlessly

    I have an SD Tivo that I might upgrade to a HR10-250 but I was concerned they would get me for another 2 year commitment. In the past I was told unless it was a replacement for a broken unit that they would sign me up for 2 more years.

    dwynne, Are you sure you didnt get signed up for 2 years?

    I asked D* and they said no. I have not activated the HR10 yet since I am waiting on snail mail to bring me the card. I will make sure when I do that the promise no commitment. There should not be since I am not getting anything free or discounted - "in theory".

    OK, so I go to test the new to me HR10 and I get the "please wait" screen. I check and the drive is bad - spins up, makes some noise, spins down. I pull the drive and test it in a PC - same thing. I grab a new drive off the shelf an use instant cake 6.1a to put an image on it. Works fine, gets sat and OTA, etc, etc. EXCEPT - just like last time, the caked box willh not PPP in. Without being about to "dial in" I can't get guided setup to complete and without that I can't get the HR10 operational (once I get the card).

    This happened to me before on another HR10 and this cake image and I started a thread http://www.tivocommunity.com/tivo-vb/showthread.php?p=6945442 . I got no answers in the thread so I ended up restoring the OEM drive to the new drive on that box.

    I posted over on cake's forum about the problem. Has to be on their end since this is two different boxes, two different drives with the same results - or lack thereof.

    Try taking the box to someone else's house and try to have it dial in from there. Could be a problem with your phone setup. As far as I know, the InstantCake configuration is factory standard.

    I have purchased 3 used HR10-250's and I have not bought ANY new cards, all 3 are still working fine. A new card is NOT needed for the HR10-250 to work. Sure, D*TV will recommend that you buy a new card, but they also recommend that you buy one of their DVRs instead of the HR10-250.

    Be sure that they do not list your "new" HR10-250 as a "leased" device. They did that to me but changed it to owned after I called them.

    Too late for me, already ordered the card. I was going to try using the one out of the old SD Tivo but my wife wants that in her sewing room. That left me trying to convince them to activated it on the existing card, which possibly could be done by playing CSR roulette until I got one to go for it. In the end I paid the $20 to avoid the hassle, since the HR10 was free I have $20 total in the Tivo and the card :) .

    Odd, everytime I've ever activated new equipment there was a reset on the commitment. All owned until the HR21 (August 2007). I'm talking about ten years of experience with D*. (Okay, the commitment on the fist box was 90 days, but the next one to go online was a 1 year commit.)
