Really? Why not I wonder. Can't be that hard to shoot in HD can it?

actually, it is...the HD cameras weigh a ton and cost over $100,000...they are easily harmed by things such as sand...

(all this info is what I saw others post, I have no knowledge of such things on a first-hand basis)...

left un-answered is why they don't upconvert the show in the studio...

It also takes a lot more space to store the actual video. I can only imagine how many thousands of hours of video they shoot. Having it all stored in HD would take a ridiculous amount of space.

That being said, I wish they did it. :(

That's probably the main reason, rather than camera price and/or weight.

Many nature shows and similar seem to be shot in HD, so I think they could overcome that problem. But they don't have to shoot video 24 hours a day for a month...

I've heard all of Mark Burnett's excuses for several seasons now--too expensive, too hard to do, yada yada. But can you imagine the ratings pump Survivor would get if they finally did go HD? Not only the eye candy (or anti-eye candy, as the case may be), but the locales they film in.

Before too long, some major reality show will go HD. Then the others will have to follow. Why not be the leader?

    Completely agree with this.

The main issue I see with Burnett's "too hard to do" argument is that the cameras on the islands are mostly stationary, as opposed to something like The Amazing Race (which I imagine will be in SD for a looooooooong time). I don't see any reason why they couldn't do it if they get the financial commitment.
