I've been running two TiVos (Series 1 and Series 2) for a while with both being controlled with a Glo-Remote via the slide switch so I'm familiar with programming them for separate remote codes.

My Series 3 HD arrived today and am I correct in assuming that I'll have to use a second remote programmed to a different code from the other two?

I.E. the Series 1 is set for Remote code 1 and the Series 2 is set for Remote code 2.

So I'd have to program the Series 3 and a second remote for remote code 3?

Yes, or get yourself a universal that can do all three and more.

I've got an MX-700 programmed for codesets 1 thru 9. I mess around with so many Tivos that I automatically assign a different code to each one so they won't interfere with the operation of my regular Tivos. I keep a peanut remote handy for changing the codeset and then use the universal remote to control each one

The only preset tivo code in the mx500 is for address zero. If you have two tivos already programmed in you had to have taught the commands, so you have to teach third device the tivo commands from tivo remote set to third alternate address.

I would think that the suggestion to use a universal remote for all three tivos was just to eliminate the need for a second Tivo peanut

Yep. I had to teach all nine codesets to my MX-700. The nice thing about the Home Theater Master remotes is that you can save each codeset as a file and upload it to a website such as remotecentral.com. I believe they have lots of Tivo codesets posted there just waiting for you to download them to your remote.

Yes, that's part of the reason why I've been using the MX-500 for the TV, receiver (especially switching inputs), and DVD player but not the TiVos.
I also prefer the TiVo peanut for TiVoing.....
    (shrug)

However, I'm giving it a rethink right now.

Don't you need a JP-1 cable to do that?

not for the 700 which is why I think it is light years better than the 500. It uses a serial cable that works with their program - you can learn commands directly to the PC.

I just switched to having three HR20's from having three 10-250's and I need to reprogram my 700. I'll get to it soon ;)

Oh, that explains the earlier remark.

Well, I won the MX-500 at the 2004 TC Con so it's been pretty good for what I paid for it (insert obligatory thanks to Robert at Value Electronics).

And I won the HD TiVo at the 2007 TC Con.....
(insert obligatory thanks to Lou at DVRUpgrade)

I have no website, if it's remote central you're speaking of, I'm just a contributor there, like here. :)
