It's 2020. Tivos are ugly boxes, so why not make them functional ugly. U-verse dvrs have buttons on the front and can be run and programmed without a remote. So can cable dvrs. Remotes disappear, phones apps fail (big time sometimes), remotes stop pairing.. Give us buttons on the front like other equipment has. (A clock would be nice too, but I won't push it :D).

I think that ship sailed a long time ago, the cable boxes that still have them lack the vision of the artisans who design today’s electronics.

seems mostly pointless to me.. even more things that can break..

didn't one TiVo actually have buttons so you could do most things from the front? I can't think of what other electronics I've had besides VCRs that were sometimes completely controllable from the front.. but it seems like *something* I had was.

My Series 3 had buttons. I hardly ever used them, maybe a couple times in 5+ years.

OP is there actually a point? or did you just want to rant about something.
With one of the best remotes on the planet why get up?
and my Apple TV and my XBX1X don't have buttons, Roku's and Firesticks don't have buttons...

I presume you understand that AT&T's next gen boxes (basically a streaming box, the DVR is in the cloud) has no buttons on the front. That is not atypical of most newer devices (no buttons other than perhaps a reset button on the back or side).

Buttons and controls on the front of devices are an anachronism from a time when a "remote control" was yelling at your child to get up and go change the channel on your TV.

They are not DVRs streaming devices are not mission critical, they don't record.

The military would want buttons. Devices that depend on a remote to do anything are short sighted cost savings.

Most audio equipment is, imagine no volume knob on a receiver and the remote fails. Remote failure is common with IR devices and worse with RF ones.

I see no difference, they are both playback consumption devices.
The whole discussion is flawed since you say "still no buttons"
The OLED S3 had buttons and since Tivo keeps metrics on everything, it would have been very clear if the buttons were being used or not, if it was that useful of a feature they might have stayed.
I have no idea why you think this is a thing that needs to happen when devices all over are removing physical buttons with no issues and you have a great remote and then phone/ipad apps, the world has changed.
Might as well complain that the Bolt doesn't have composite or component outputs.

My LG has an off/on button somewhere. Never used it and I understand it's hard to find and use.

If I had to use button on the front of a TiVo, I'd just throw it away. The OP mentions apps failing and that may happen once in a while if say the head end fails or the internet fails, but generally the app will do in a pinch.

If the OP is so worried about this he should buy a spare remote.

I had my main Vizio television for nearly 6 years before I discovered a multi-function power/input button on the back of the set.

I'm not going to tell the kids, though, so I can continue to hide the remotes when they need to be doing something else.

Most of the past few a/v receivers i have owned can be controlled from the front panel. Laborious and inconvenient but can be done.

Is that why everyone was thinner back in the 70s?

New pants usually still come with an extra button. But new babies still only come with the one.
