I have no problem with the uniform differences. Look at how the uniforms changed between TOS, TMP, TWoK, etc...

I can buy the upgraded computer interfaces over the rocker switches/blinking lights of TOS. TOS was created long before there was any concept of a personal computer, hell even mainframes were not that common in the mid 60s. So I can forgive them a piss poor interface. They still called data storage data tapes... How anyone was supposed to know what was going on with them still boggles the mind.

I'm less enthralled with the look of Enterprise we saw in the brief glimpse we got. It just seemed too much of a modern aesthetic. Too many windows/lights visible from the exterior, the nacelles and struts looked wrong. They used the original design for DS9, why not here?

I really hope the "New Captain" is a head fake and Saru is promoted to Captain.

Possible. I was betting on Prime Lorca, but during the forced boarding and mind-meld that became unlikely. Could we possibly be getting a new character?

Could they not even know themselves? That would explain why they didn't tease the new captain in this episode...they may not have decided which direction they're going to go next season (possibly depending on the story they end up deciding to tell?).

On After Trek the host hit the three producers/etc with rapid fire questions. About half of the questions they wouldn't answer, so I think they know what's up.

    Because it's cheesy fan-service?

"Trials and Tribble-ations", the DS9 episode that brought back the TOS Enterprise was over 20 years ago. "In a Mirror Darkly," the Enterprise episode that brought back the TOS Defiant was 13 years ago. They're essentially gimmicks to win ratings sweeps and they work every time. It's predictably giving people what they want- and it's not always a good thing.

A reminder of what the female crew would have been wearing if they had stuck with the original concept.

I also recall that Spock kidnapped Pike, violated General Order #7, which carries the death penalty, disobeyed orders, hijacked the Enterprise. Mutiny runs in the family - no wonder Spock avoids talking about his foster sister.

Not so much due to the obvious fan service (which it blatantly is), but more due to the issue that it is clearly not what the Enterprise looked like from that era. I still like the look of it, just not in this context.

You do realize there IS no Enterprise from that era or any other, right?

In the 60s, they did the best they could at depicting a fictional spaceship. They can do better now.

Like I said in a different thread, I don't mind them updating the cosmetics just don't give them more capabilities than the shows with a timeline that comes after this show's timeline. The Star Trek movies did this well, they updated the look of the ships, uniforms, special effects, etc. without adding capabilities not seen in TOS.

Except for the fact that they should have had him offer something else by saying "try some Tranya!"

I’ve still go 4 episodes to watch. Now that I’ve read that the new season won’t begin until 2019, I’m not going to rush through these last ones.

OK, that was...weird. I guess I went into this episode expecting both a gigantic climax, along with a cliffhanger--and that the war would continue through next season. Instead, this episode was a lot more subdued. They used the 9 month "skip" when returning from the mirror universe to allow the war to rage on, but they never had to do a big space battle. In fact, were there any episodes other than the pilot that involved any significant space battles?

While the resolution was unexpected, it was good. It was true to Star Trek, and it lightened the show's dark, heavy tone.

I'm hoping they don't make Saru captain. I love the character, but I think this show works best with the captain being a more secondary character. It allows for some mystery that you can't have when the captain is a primary character.

I didn't expect them to have the guts to run into the Enterprise. I think the only complaint I have with the look is the strange double nacelles. Everything else was close enough to the Prime universe Enterprise to feel accurate without feeling like a 60's throwback. The real question is going to be how (or if) hey show the interiors. Doing the math, it seems like the Enterprise should be about 10 years older than the Discovery, so they could make it feel a little older, while still updating the 60's sets to something not so cheesy..or at least more modern.

Michael is the main character of this (at least for Season 1), so putting anyone in the Captain's chair (but her) keeps them a secondary character. I didn't want Saru to get it at first, but I think he does well, and I think it gives him a better chance of surviving. :) But I think it will be someone else, since they teased it.

Maybe they're going to Vulcan to pick up their new captain - Sybok.

I'd say that Michael is the lead, but I'd consider Saru (along with Tilley and Stamets) as primary characters. Lorca was always right on the edge of that "primary character" line for me, and I'm hoping that the new captain will be firmly on the secondary character side of things. I like the idea of the show telling the story from the perspective of the crew, rather than the captain.

I haven't been impressed with any of DSC's planned recurring characters. Mudd, M'Rell, Tyler, Emperor Georgiu, Admiral whatherface.

Hell, I want to see Clint Howard again more than any of the others.

Absolutely with your idea of lead/primary. Lorca was a special case because he was so important to the storyline of Season 1. I'm sure it's really hard to tell the story from the crew perspective because "that's not the way it's always been done." I do think it will be hard to not have the captain as a primary character, since they are the focal point of the bridge action. :)

Don't buy it, too much drama available. :) But he might be gone for a season.
