A family member wants to buy a S2 dual tuner tivo for her husband for Christmas. Whats the best deal out there right now? Are there any good pre paid options, where you pay for a years service and you get the unit for cheap?

Or is she better off buying from a retail store like amazon.com?

I am guessing this is their first unit. I don't know of any good S2 DT deals going on at the retail stores. I believe all that I know of is the same as order from Tivo.com but require the rebate. Maybe someone else might know something better.

As far as service goes I have to recommend the 3 years prepaid currently at $299 it is the best deal at $8.31/month and then after they will roll out to the monthly price of the 3 year committment (currently $12.95).

I recently bought my Dual tunner TiVo from Best Buy off the shelf for $249, then got a $150 rebate, end cost 99 bucks. Rebate calls for you to subscribe for at least 1 year or your credit card will be charged back.

The 80 hour DT is only $69.99 direct from TiVo, with no rebate involved. You can also get a 180 hour DT for $169.99.

Sounds like that is the old rebate.

I agree that Tivo is the best option unless you really want a 180 HR DT and can find a better deal. I don't think you can find much of a better deal on the 80 HR. Only thing is if Tivo charges tax for your state but Amazon does not, but even then you won't save much off the tax break and technically you are supposed to report that purchase to the IRS (but who remembers/does).

I was just saying the $150 was the old rebate. The current rebates is $180 for DT or $220 for ST.

If she wants to pre-pay one year it's another $200. (3 is $300) Not great, but possibly the best deal at the moment for prepaid deals. There were some better ones before they raised rates ($70 + $156... or less), but time marches on.

So how long is that 3-year pre-pay deal going to last? Anyone know?
