Last night SNL showed this skit:

Tasteless (too soon) or fair game?

Personally, I'm leaning toward tasteless... don't see anything redeeming about it

I actually watched the open through the first few skits to see if Dakota Johnson was as horrible as people say she is

Saw that ISIS skit. I too wondered if it really was in poor taste or funny or just dumb and un-funny. I lean towards it being unfunny/dumb and in slightly poor taste.

It was parody. I think "too soon" is probably a stronger argument than "too far", but even then, it made me laugh.

Yeah, I think that's a better way to phrase it.

I thought it was hilarious...I really can't get my head around these 15 year old girls who run away from England or wherever to join ISIS.

I recognized it as a take off on the "dad dropping off his daughter for military service" commercial we've seen over the past few months. I wondered where it was going and then I saw the truck...I screamed ISIS!!!

And then the dad mouthed, "Take care of her." and the response about death to America was perfect.

    Dead on comedy.

    For me.

    I thought it was funny.

When I was checking youtube to avoid the news anchor blather in the OPs link, I see SNL did a ISIS on Sharkweek sketch also.

also, this thread should be moved to the tv show talk forum.

Man, people are getting over sensitive if they think this is going too far.

You say tasteless and insensitive like its a bad thing. Perfectly appropriate when it comes to ISIS. The only thing that would be more appropriate is a Hellfire misssle striking the pickup as it drives off as the Predator drone wags its wings.

This is even a question? Seriously?

It's topical comedy. It can't be "too soon", only "too late" to be funny.

Maybe if it was a sketch about the beheadings, then there could be an argument for calling it tasteless and/or "too soon".

But making fun of the stupid little girls who are ISIS groupies? Totally fair game. Maybe you didn't like Michael Che's Update jokes on the topic either?

With all the insane stuff SNL has done as commercials over the years, this was just another example of "stupid". It's not even worthy of the word "offensive".

My chief complaint was that neither the daughter nor the father looked of Arab or African ancestry, so I wondered about them being Islamic in any way and the daughter thus thinking about joining ISIS.

It was more a case of "this makes no sense" in my case, long before any "this is a bad joke" thoughts.

Are those girls of Arab or African ancestry? Are they Muslim?

What do their fathers look like?

Why does it matter? Your basis for judging the commercial was the actors' appearance. And as you now see, it's not inconsistent with that of the actual real-life girls that were being referenced by the sketch.

EDIT: again, it doesn't matter, but no, neither of those two girls are Arab or African. They are Bosnian Muslims.

That's what I thought it would be, given the screams about tasteless.
