Never been a big fan of the Lawrence Welk skit, and I wasn't impressed with her monologue. I really liked Lil Poundcake though.

Arlene hits on Tim started kinda slow but finished strong, same with Stomp, I didn't get where they were going with it but the ending was great, especially the one girl dancing in front of everyone else shooting their guns.

The Essentials was just pretty good, until the punchline, "On all fours with four closeted gay men..." I lost it, really funny stuff.

McCarthy really impressed me - particularly the falling down the stairs and the ending of the hidden valley ranch sketch.

Unfortunately - the writing was so bad -
    I don't think I laughed once in 90 minutes.

I was pleasantly surprised. The secret is to go into watching the show with really low expectations. Sometimes they can rise above that. :)

I thought the secret was watching SNL after taking drugs and/or alcohol. Or watching old reruns from the 70s. Or both.

Trust me - I go in with ZERO expectations.
Last season's finale with Justin Timberlake was one that surprised the hell out of me.

But sometimes I think they are going out of their way to NOT be funny. And seriously if they don't do something to shake up weekend update soon. it's just tired at this point.

And while I am on my soapbox - also need some new faces - lots of the regulars are tired and predictable. I can think of 5 off the top of my head they should get rid of.

The character is Dooneese played by Kristen Wiig, and no, nobody knows.

    Judice?

I guess I'm alone. I CRACK UP at the Lawrence Welk sketches, and have since the first one. And I have not much of a problem with Kristen Wiig. And I give her mad credit for recognizing that some of her characters of a certain type are overplayed and taking them off the table.

This episode was just okay. I love Melissa McCarthy, and she's really, really funny. But like the Ed Helms episode last season, I felt she was underused.

I did enjoy "The Comments Section", though. :)

I HAAAAAAAAAATE Lady Antebellum. Sadly, I was watching live at my in-laws, with just OTA, so I had to watch them. These performances did not change my mind. At. All.

I did enjoy "The Comments Section" as well. It made me wish that every troll I've encountered on the net was watching and somehow made them realize how much of a "troll " they really are.

    I'm sure it didn't though. :(

Yeah, that wasn't my best choice of words.

    Underwritten? Underutilized?

The writing wasn't great given her comedic talent.

Was that really the Blue Man Group in the digital short?

Also I guess next weeks host is going to beat Jimmy Fallon to the punch as the first cast member to return to host the show this season.

I'm pretty sure one of them was Fred Armisen.

I missed the promo, who is it?

Who, as a matter of fact, appeared with the Blue Man Group as a part of the pre-recorded video segments in their "How To Be a Megastar" tours.

    Next week's host is
    Ben Stiller
I didn't realize he was a former cast member, but that's what The Futon Critic says...

Yeah, I think he was in like one season in the 80's. Possibly even the first cast after the original one.

EDIT: okay, not the first cast after the original, but in the 80's. He was a featured player in the 88-89 season.
