Ok, This is one of the few SNL's that I didn't FastForward once the entire show,( well maybe the digital short). Even the opening skit, I've grown tired of her doing that bit, but seeing Eltons reaction was great.

I too thought the whole show was a pretty good effort.

I swear Leon's mic wasn't turned on for most of the first song...

We enjoyed most of the episode.

Least favorite part was Kristen Wiig's character in the Lawrence Welk skit.

Liked Elton making fun of himself!

They missed an opportunity to do more with the Bronx Zoo Cobra, I think.

Chock full of guest stars this week! Good to see Will Forte again. Don't know why he left in the first place...

And they're so completely and totally formulaic, yet they manage to make it fresh and funny every time. Unlike, say, the Spartan Cheerleaders from back in the day.

The best one for me was "Helping you relax when mother nature attacks your slacks.... Tampax!" :D

    You are not alone.

Actually, I had a mental "wish list" for sketches for the Elton John episode:

    • A "Judice" sketch, with Elton John as her foil.
    • A cameo by Maya Rudolph as Donatella Versache with Elton John playing himself (since the Donatella Versache sketches always had Horatio Sans as Elton John).

I got one of my wishes.

Overall, I thought it was a pretty good episode. I think they wore the "Elton John is gay" as the punchline of the sketch a little thin (as most of the sketches seemed to be based on this theme) but in general, a pretty good episode.

I'm buying (probably "downloading" specifically...) the album by Elton John and Leon Russell! (It's produced by T-Bone Burnett too! Every music production T-Bone Burnett has anything to do with tends to be awesome!)

Edit to add: The "Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip as cockney thugs" sketches are one of the funniest things SNL has come up with in some time, IMHO!

I guess I will have to be the voice of dissent.

This was just about as bad as all other recent SNLs and Elton John was just god-awful.
Every other skit was centered around his being gay.
I got it you are an out queen now - enough already.

I think the only skit that I didn't completely fast forward through was the Queen of England and by the time they got to the punk song at the end it was clear they had a good premise and didn't know how to end it - and I loved the fact that John is a good enough sport to let them make fun of his changing the lyrics to Candle in the Wind for Princess Diana.

As far as the musical numbers
    - I am neither a Elton John fan or not a fan but that just seemed like a wholelotta screaming to me and Leon Russell looked like he was dead through both songs. In fact, I am still not sure they didn't bring in a Madame Tussaud's wax figure to sit at the other piano.

Even weekend update was lamer than usual.

I didn't think it was spectacular (although I've only watched about 3/4 so far.) I did like the Judice sketch and the KY sketch (it took me a bit to warm to those, but now I think they're hilarious.)

Maybe he stepped away with expectations of a big movie career when he filmed "MacGruber" -- expecting $20M per movie like Mike Myers, Adam Sandler, Will Ferrell, etc.

They did overplay the gay thing throughout the show, IMHO.

But I've noticed that they seemed to do a lot of guys kissing guys on SNL as, I dunno, shock-comedy? Discomfort comedy? Awkward comedy?

It seems like a hack gimmick to me.

Like Leno when he would portray himself in a gay relationship with Kevin Eubanks, or have either of them cross dressing. Is it really FUNNY to people? I just thought those sorts of things as cheap, and I would have thought that gay people might be offended by the idea that having straight men (mostly) depicting gay relationships or lifestyles is funny.

And I'm not really a fan of political correctness, but it just seems to be "hack comedy".
