Do smart TV's have any advantages for Tivo users?
1. Faster apps
2. Newer versions of apps
3. More apps, including Disney+
No, if you already have a Roku or similar.
Since my TV is a 4K smart TV, and my TiVo is a Roamio Plus, it was advantageous for me because Netflix and Prime Video were faster and the latter supported 4K viewing. Now that I've got a Fire TV Stick 4K, I no longer use my Smart TV apps and go to it instead. My TiVo is still where I watch regular network and cable programming I record.
New LG OLED apps and integration better and faster than TiVo, Roku, FireTV.
Thanks. With smart TV's, can you watch anything on the the internet, or just through apps? For example, local news and weather?
If the TV (such as LG) supports Airplay, then yes.
We had just become regular viewers of AmazonPrime on our computers a few months ago. Realizing our Samsung smart TV had the app, we got that all set up and enjoyed it, but our TV wanted to reboot itself at random times to check for updates. Then we realized our stand-alone BluRay player also has apps, and we switched to watching Prime shows that way, which turned out to be faster to load and navigate than the Samsung. (I'm keeping the TiVo Premiere at the old SD TE3 menus which never gave me any apps, so I have nothing to compare) We've taken the Samsung off the internet connection and it still reboots itself; gotta find the menu to disable that.
