With no requirement to activate service?

Seems worthwhile to buy it, take the slide remote, and cut the remainder up for parts and ebay them.

Read the fine print. Separate subscription required and subscription required to access Netflix.

    Reread the fine print:

Also says the usual bit about 19.99/month sub required, yaddayadda. They really should update that to include the lifetime option, but that would probably take more space than they could include. Either way, it's not relevant to the purchase - they're just covering their butts that you need a sub TO USE THE BOX. It's not like they make you activate it in store.

Taking the remote and then selling the Tivo looks to be a decentish idea - you'll have the Tivo new in box, never activated, after all. Of course, the slide briefly dropped to $38 on Amazon recently... makes one wonder.

I'd say you could save the hard drive to use as a backup, but it's so easy to use a 2TB drive or whatnot. Really, if you want spare parts and a slide remote, this is a decent way to get them - you're essentially paying about $60 for the Tivo to have as a backup and the discounted $40 amazon price for the Slide.

I logged into my tivo account and it said i was eligible for the $400 MSD. So i can buy this and add the $400 lifetime to it and then give it to my mom who lives in a diferent address right? Just checking. I think ill do this. I should wait a year before upgrading harddrive if i want to maintain warranty yes? I saw on tivo.com hulu+ is being offered free for 6 months with new subscription. Nice. It says you have until june 2012 to redeem it too.

What you are suggesting will work. I'm not sure about your warranty question but you could also go with an external drive and not void the warranty.

Yeah, I came across a newspaper at an assisted living facility where I was having lunch on Sunday (but not where I live... yet) and saw the ad. I read it too fast and assumed the promotion was for the Premiere XL, but it looks to be just the Premiere. Seems like a good deal. Honestly, the Premiere XL should always come bundled with this remote, along with integrated Bluetooth and 802.11n.

I'm interested to see how the Premiere Elite is configured. I think the Slide Remote should replace all other remotes in the lineup although not having Bluetooth built into the Premiere and PremiereXL might make TiVo hesitate to do that. I wouldn't use the wireless connection but agree that it should also be standard like it is in the Roku and ATV.

Assuming the Premiere Elite makes it to retail, I'd think they'd have to add some of these bells and whistles to differentiate the three Premiere tiers (unless they choose to keep it two). However, I imagine the MSOs would provide only the standard remote and TiVo, Inc would have an opportunity to market accessories like the Slide to double dip. And its new price point is much more realistic. Although combined with this giveaway it makes me wonder if TiVo produced too many to sell at the previous price and they're thinning inventory.

I wonder if Roger's will make any comments on this at next month's Conference Call.

I'm guessing they were able to reduce the manufacturing costs by making a large purchase -- they are cash-rich after all. I'm guessing they are probably selling the Slide Remote to Amazon in the $30-$35 range. I think the intagible benefit of getting more Slide Remote's in the wild is hard to measure but significant. For example, FiOS 1.9 User Experience is very good but they need a QWERTY remote to complete the experience.

They do have plenty of cash, but with only 1.2 million active TiVo units out there I'm not sure how many Slides they'd actually manufacture and how much purchasing power they'd have given what I'd expect is relatively a low number. Then again, we don't know what the original markup was and components do tend to come down in price over time. I do agree the Slide provides some marketing muscle - so they could be underwriting hardware or reducing their profit with that thought in mind.

Bought the deal yesterday and got the free remote. Will be replacing my lifetime S3 with the lifetime Premiere. Now I just need to find a buyer for my S3 so I can justify to my wife buying yet another Tivo.

At. Tivo.com it says any new subscription gets 6 months free hulu plus. Dont forget to redeem this. I assume this promotion will apply no matter where you buy your tivo. Evidently tivo direct at 8773678486 will match this bestbuy slide offer.

I bought all three of my Tivos with this deal. Now we've got two Tivo remotes for each room. The Slide is very nice when you are doing searches.

I took the deal Monday night when my S3 up and died on me. Wasn't super thrilled to get the Premier but was the easiest option at the time. Now I need to get a new HD for the S3 and an image to drop back on it and I'll move it up to the bedroom to replace the craptacular FiOS DVR.

Doesn't the slide remote only pair with one box? Or can you also use it as an IR remote? I have three Premieres in my main viewing area. With IR, I can point the TiVo remote sor my Harmony in any direction and the tiVos receive the signal. Even if I put the remote behind the couch and aim it at the couch or the floor the TiVos still receive. If I can use the slide remote in IR mode I might get one. But only being able to pair it to one tiVo is a little limiting.

Now that's a good deal. If one wants a Premiere, now is the time to get it, and the remote for FREE. I hope TiVo presents similar deals soon.

I heard that if you call tivo direct and mention the bestbuy slide deal they will match it. You might want to try this if your local Bb is out of stock since there online inventory is gone. My stock is waiting at BB for me. I called tivo to make sure my BB still qualified for 6 month free hulu+. It does.
I have a question about the hulu promotion. It says it doesn'thave to be redeemed until 6/30 2012 in terms at tivo.com but it also says promo can be pulled at anytime. I just wanted to makesure i can start my subscription for the box now (buy lifetime) and even if the promos pulled this year for the free hulu, can i still wait to next year to start my free hulu before 6/30
