This show is SOOOOOO good. I mean unbelievably good. The first two seasons are available, somewhere, and the third seems to be trickling out (not living in UK, I have no idea about original air dates).

I wish the television here in the US was like this. Now I don't think that this is completely realistic (not everyone is having sex and doing drugs at this age), but it's much more real than the teen dramas shown here, where everyone speaks perfectly and talks perfectly and has unlimited money.

I highly recommend it, even for those well beyond their teen years.

It's kindof a very forward modern teen drama with lots of sex and drugs :) British style.

It follows - I think 8 teens through a couple of years in high school.

Season 3 (series 3) is supposedly about a new group after the original have graduated.

Most of the episodes are quite brilliant - although a couple are kindof head scratching huh? (like the one where they go to Russia - what the heck was that?)

It makes shows like Gossip Girl look like Sesame Street.

Season 1 of Skins was amazing. I thought the show kind of lost itself after the 1st season.

    +1

The Tony plotline is kindof jumpin the shark worthy, but by that time I was invested in the characters enough to keep watching.

I will say however that the season 2 final episode is also quite brilliant and almost makes up watching the season to get to it.

You can read more about it at Wikipedia. Although I will say that there are major spoilers included on that page so if spoilers ruin it for you, do not read.

But as was mentioned, it's a TV comedy/drama following British teens. The first season was awesome, the beginning of the second season not so much, and the final part of the second season coming close to the first season.

    You will not be disappointed.

The new MTV version of Skins is being called child pornography by the PTC. I watched the first episode and didn't see anything to garner that type of description.

I've seen the first 3 seasons of the UK show. Watching the first ep of the US version now to see what the big deal is. Child porn? Really?

Why is it called skins? Is that slang for rubbers/condoms/proscholastics, etc?

Saw some preview/trailer clips. This sounds like really low-end entertainment.

I would prefer the name Zig Zag then.

Some of the actors are underage so if they engage in sexual type activities it is child porn. If it was adults playing teenagers then it is not. I think I heard on the news one of the actors was 15 years old.

    No, it's a really low-end re-make.

The original was brilliant. This version pails in comparison.

I don't know why but the UK original cast never felt like they were high school teenagers. This cast is mostly miscast and feels like grade schoolers.

And MTV thanks the PTC for the controversial publicity.

    The Brits did it better.

The UK version the students are going to sixth form college which ranges from ages 16 - 19.

Legal consent for sex is at age 16
Minimum age for smoking is 18 (raised in 2007, was 16, during series 1 of the UK version)
Minimum age to buy alcohol is 18. At age 16 you can drink in any pub or bar if someone of age buys for you.

I watched the first episode of the MTV series, and the plot is IDENTICAL to the BBC series. It has been a few years since I saw the BBC season 1, but I did not notice a single plot item that they changed. They did make scenery and language changes to Americanize it, and there was no nudity (in the BBC series, the woman across the street did not have anything strategically covering her), they did not even have the pictures of naked people on Tony's blanket in the MTV series!

So, I do not get the accusations of child pornography at all. If the plot stays true to the BBC series, then there will be teenagers having sex, but I would think you would have to SHOW naked children having sex to have child pornography, and the BBC series never showed anything like that. There were a few naked women in the BBC series, but certainly no naked children. And the MTV series seems to be showing less than the BBC series. So the child pornography charge is absurd. Some people are just uptight, I guess.

Of course it's OK if they talk about teens having sex. American shows have that all the time. But like john4200 says, it's if they show teens having sex where it gets tricky. Hope MTV is smart enough to avoid that. I imagine they are.

The way I understand it though, a lot of the complaints are that the show makes it seem that sex, drugs, smoking, boozing, are routine and common among teenagers (I think we need to give the show a little more time to see if that charge is valid) and that might serve as encouragement to all the teen viewers that will be watching the show. Even though the premiere episode was rated TV-MA, a third of it's viewers were under 18, so that is something to think about.

If parents are concerned that their teenagers are viewing the show and might get the wrong idea, then it would probably be a good idea for the parents to, you know, TALK with their teenagers about the subject.
