Yeah, find a way to get Cable Labs to let my S3 do MRV and TTG. Spending $1000 on a new S3 with lifetime transfer and going backwards is frustrating to say the least.

I know you meant ota analog goes away, and it does - but analog CABLE doesn't, so they'll still need the encoders. There is no time frame for the phase out of analog cable. And we're hoping the CableCARD 2.0 specs will be out by then. They've only been delayed a couple of years already.

The OP posted the same thing in the Suggestions forum, these are my replies from there:

Why? Nothing is broadcast in 1080p, and I know of know plans for anyone to use it. You claim in another post ESPN HD is going to 1080p - I can't find any reference to back that up. They currently use 720p. I'd be surprised if cable would carry 1080p because it would double the bandwidth requirements over 1080i.

You need to do your research. A single M-Card supports up to 5 simultaneous streams. So you'd only need one card to support up to 5 tuners. But tuners aren't free, how many people really need more than 2?

I agree that an adjustable live buffer and a free space indicator would be nice additions.

I'm not even sure what you mean by this. If you mean automatically detecting channels - the S3 does this already.

All already coming in an update. TiVo has said so multiple times.

    Eh, I don't see a great need.

Aka a Title Auto Record Wish List.

And why exactly does it need this? Just to be more expensive? TiVo is NOT A PC. It is an embedded system and it does most of its work with dedicated hardware. Therefore it needs vastly less RAM than a PC, which does most things in software. And it doesn't need that fast of a CPU because it has specialized hardware dedicated to specific tasks, not generic logic that has to do everything in software like a PC. Don't think of the TiVo like it is a PC and think it needs PC level hardware, that's wrongheaded.

Both contingent on CableLabs approval. TiVo can't do anything with out it.

    Gone and never coming back.

Nice, but I don't know how useful it would really be for most people.

    What does that mean?

There are messages when there are major updates - new features, etc. There is no point it putting messages in for each little tweak, like 8.0.1a to 8.0.1b. That's rather the point of a system like TiVo, it updates and takes care of itself without bugging the user. Geeks who give a **** about that kind of thing can get the info from forums like these.

(And no, this really, really doesn't need to be stickied.)

    ---

Threads in this forum aren't stickied - except for the one frequently requested thread, obviously.

And I know what bookmarks are for - but how many people are really going to use them? I doubt it is worth investing the resources when there are a million other things the developers could do that are more useful. Same with PIP. In five years of owning a TiVo, there have been maybe a couple of times I might have used it - but probably not. Jumping to the closest tick mark and then using FF/RW is fine.

Auto-tuning - eh, I suppose it is useful for people who bother to still watch Live TV.

More than two tuners - again, tuners aren't free, And it isn't just tuners, you need supporting encoders, unless you're going to limit it to recording digital channels only. And more encoders mean more RAM since each has a dedicated bank. So the cost is non-negligible. That means higher production costs, and likely higher product costs. In return, how many people are really going to buy the unit for more tuners? How many people who would buy won't because of a higher cost? There does not seem to be much demand for more than two tuners in one box. Sure, there is some, there are people who cram 8 tuners in a PC and want more, but it has to be viable as a business.

As for visual representations of conflicts - I requested that a few years ago.

You need to switch to decaf.

If you want all those features, just get a Vista Media Center PC when they are available.

    End of discussion.

    And stop bumping this thread.

I watch a show but am unable to complete it. My wife comes up and watches same show when I am now around. My place in the stream is lost. A bookmark would allow me to set my place and not have it lost simply by watching the same program from the start.

I would like to be able to resume the show without hunting around for several minutes trying to find where I left off.

Imagine if you will the scenario where TiVo never remembers where it left off and always starts shows at the beginning. Not a big issue because you can always jump to the nearest tick and then hunt forwards or backwards to where you left off. Still, it is a handy feature.

Because my wife and I are on different work schedules, one of the reasons why a TiVo is so nice to have, this manner of conflict actually happens quite a bit.

A critical need? As you say, there is a workaround. Useful? Without a doubt.

I don't have to imagine - with my SA8300HD-DVR, it's a reality! If you're watching one program, and decide to start watching another, when you go back to the first one, it plays from the beginning.

I've just gotten used to - I'm not spending ~$700 to have a box remember where I am in a program.

Herr's a thought, watch TV with your wife (this might not work for spouses working different shifts).

OK, I can see that scenario.

I think the best solution for a multi-user household is User Zones - like Kid Zones, only each user gets their own Zone. SPs could be tied to multiple Zones, and each Zone would remember things like playback status independently. This would also help the "A deleted the show before B watched it" issue.

+1. That's one of the "features" I can't figure out why SA hasn't fixed yet. It's not a big deal if you tend to watch a show right after you record it, and complete it (which is how we use our SA). But for building up a variety of shows to watch, and going in & out of them as time permits, it's untenable. That's where the TiVo UI is so much sleeker.

I discovered the great majority of crmlht's posts were 'bump' about a month ago. I called him on it, and got no reply. I even did a "report this post" because I found it offensive, and against the spirit of these forums. Now you've noticed it too. Here is one of my replies to one of his bumps...

[back to me again] crmlht: You are now up to 11 out of 21 posts, either "bump" or "any more ideas" (wow, what a novel way to say 'bump'). So in the month since I last harangued you, you have been batting .600; 3/of/5 posts have been bumps.

wasn't sure if i should bump this or start a new thread, but one of the things I desperately want - especially now that TiVo will be activating eSATA expansion - is more control over how to display the "Now Playing" list. with many of us having 1TB of storage or more, alphabetically and by date as the only two options just isn't going to cut it.

I want to be able to organize all that programming in a way that makes sense. the ability to create my own folders and move things up and down like you can with season passes would be ideal. Failing that, how about sorting by some other things that TiVo already keeps track of like folders for movies by genre, first run series vs. repeats, sports, etc.

I'm still trying to figure out what the benefit of the HD folder is. Seems pretty pointless.

Does anybody know if any plans to add such functionality have ever been discussed? Can anybody offer an explanation as to how or why this would pose a challenge for TiVo to implement?

Is there any third party solution for something like this?

Is there any way to utilize MRV or TTG to re-order things in now playing? If I moved something off my TiVo, deleted it, and then moved it back, where would it go in the "by date" list? to the top or based on when it was originally recorded?

I don't think there is currently any way to reorder recordings manually. You're still stuck by date or name.

The new 9.1 software (sign up @ http://www.tivo.com/priority/) gives you more options for organizing your wishlist recordings. You can name the folders whatever you want.

If you have not yet discovered wishlists, this is something you should play with, as it is one of Tivo's best features. Wishlists can automatically record all content meeting certain keywords of categories and will organize them into folder names you set.

I use wishlists, but don't have 9.1 yet. I'll play around with it when i do as it sounds like it's probably better than nothing.

but that still wouldn't help with the programming I already have.
