Very little in life is a big deal, but if there's a marketing department, surely someone will be telling you it is. It's just something they've never done before.

yeah... just a "gimmick" to get people talking and maybe a few more people to tune in at an alternate time if you live out west.

Though for people in the eastern and central time zones, it's just another normal SNL in it's normal expected time slot.

Melissa McCarthy was doing her sketch live via satellite from Los Angeles, so they couldn't really have interaction with the press corps and that's why the sketch seemed a little more hollow than the previous versions.

In an era of social media, where people post about what's happening on the show, but half the country hasn't seen it yet, this makes it so that everyone can talk about it simultaneously. Also, Saturday night TV isn't what it used to be, so NBC can probably get better ratings at 8:30 pm PT from SNL than they could from any other show they would be airing in that slot.

It will be interesting to see if they keep this up in the fall or if this is just a one-month stunt.

I doubt they'll keep it up. It means they take over the earlier slots out west. As much as I prefer it, I don't think it will happen.

This week the early slot was hockey so they didn't miss anything.

This. This is why they did it, and I think I remember them saying that people in the mountain zones and west coast were continually spoiled via Twitter or Facebook or other social media about SNL East Coast, and had to wait hours to see what everyone was talking about. I think it's a great idea to air live across the country.

I found almost all of this episode really strong. Yeah, the comedian guy during WU was tedious, I FF through that. And Turtle Shirt fell flat.. it was really kinda dumb and the CGI looked really expensive for a dumb joke. I enjoyed the rest of the episode. I liked the punch line of "Doug Tries to get Jen Back", since SNL never knows how to end a skit, they nailed it that time.

Finally finished watching tonight. I thought it was a good episode all around. The late sketches were funnier than usual. What slayed me was something that happened at home while watching. My 6 yo daughter had snuck out of bed and was watching from the hallway...unbeknownst to me. She only saw the Turtle Shirt sketch before I caught her. She said, "I want that shirt." I told her, "No, honey, it's just a joke. That's not a real shirt." She looked embarrassed and pulled her nightgown up over her head to hide like a turtle. I think it's the hardest I've laughed in a month!!
