Just got my Series 3 Tivo today, having finally upgraded from my five-and-a-half-year-old Series 1. Yay.

Noticed a few oddities with it so far, and not sure how many of them are actual issues and how many are user-error or configuration-related.

Regardless, here is my list so far:

    1. When entering and exiting various menus, sometimes the screen will, in the space of about a second, go black, then draw some of the menu lettering without the colored backgrounds, then go green, then draw the lettering again, then finally settle in drawing the screen as normal. Although some of the discussion above hints at this possibly being related to resolution changes, I can't see why it would draw perfectly readable text on a black backround or a solid green background in the process.

    2. Although TIvo Desktop says I can access my Media Access Key by going to Messages & Settings, then "Account & System Information, then selecting Media Access Key, no such menu option is available, nor is there any such item listed under any of the three submenus under Account & System Information.

    3. After fetching my Media Access Key from the Tivo support website through Manage My Account, Tivo Desktop refuses to connect to my Tivo, claiming "There was an error while attempting to retrieve data from the selected DVR. Access is denied" no matter how many times I retyped the key, cut-and-pasted it from the website, or just yelled at the laptop in frustration (which, while somewhat satisfying, doesn't really accomplish anything tangible)

    4. Under Music, Photos, Products, & More, some of the menu options work and some do not. The ones that do not are:
    1. Live 365 - "An error occurred while running the application. H*TP failure (Error reading header 0x50005)"
    2. Podcaster - Endless 'Please wait...'
    3. SameGame - "An error occurred while running the application. HT*P failure (Error reading header 0x50005)"
    4. Wordsmith - "An error occurred while running the application. H?TP failure (Error reading header 0x50005)"
    5. Skull & Bones - "An error occurred while running the application. HT?P failure (Error reading header 0x50005)"
    6. user's Music on Server - No audio when attempting to play.

(No, it doesn't really have the * or ? in the middle of the capitalized letters, but since I haven't posted on this forums in five years, it thinks I'm trying to put a link in my post and won't permit it yet.)

Aside from the green flickers and the inability to connect with Tivo Desktop, I wouldn't really notice these problems if they didn't show up as unusable menu options.

Even with these minor glitches, it's much better than my Series 1 and it's lightyears beyond the miserable Motorola DCT6412 cablebox that Comcast is currently renting me. I'd insult it but I can't think of any insults that don't make unfair comparisons with undeserving vermin and actually flatter the DCT6412 unduly.

Tomorrow, the DCT goes away, permanently, never to darken our door again, and after a brief exorcism to flush out the residual evil spirits, the Series 3 in its current state will still take over all HD recording duties.

It would just be nice if everything worked flawlessly instead of most everything working with very few flaws, y'know?

YES, Cablevision. But the channels are not really disappearing, they are there when I go channel up, and then back down. It's a PITA, as I like to use the guide to find a program, and then just like to GO there quickly. This seems to be a sort of new glitch for me, that is getting more and more common. Esp on certain stations.

Just spoke w/Matt at Tivo Support and he is fairly certain that 8.1 (which is already being released) will alleviate the disappearing channel problem. We'll see.

Mine does something like that on the resolution change - I think that its a normal part of the process.

I think that all of this isn't working becuase TTG and MRV are not enabled. You should still be able to get to your desktop for music and photos from your Tivo without the MAK.

I can't comment on the rest of your problems, I don't use any of that stuff...

Really? Has anyone seen this? I guess with folks getting back to work this week we could expect "any time", although I wouldn't expect to see much getting done this week....

My games and music work just fine. Sounds like your having a network problem.

My guess is that "Matt" is having problems separating beta releases from actual releases - this is twice he's been confused!

I'm hopeful that Matt is half-right: that they have a frozen 8.1 release that's been given to the beta-testers, which means it's only a matter of days before it gets publicly released, unless there are last minute glitches.

Of course I've seen this. It's been released on S2 for a few weeks now and that's probably what the drone at TiVo meant.

Since I work in support, I would say that you should go easy on support techs. It is most likely not their fault. If you feel like you are not getting the service you deserve, ask for a superviser.

If I were having a network problem (which I seriously doubt considering the number of other computers on my local network and the number of operating ystems and individual applications that don't have the slightest issues with it), wouldn't it be a reasonable assumption that the other items on the "Music, Photos, & More" list would be unavailable as well, exhibiting similar problems?

I have no problem accessing the "Yahoo! Photos", "Yahoo! Weather", "Yahoo Traffic", "Browse and Buy Movie Tickets", and "Kikon: Legends Behind The Lens" items, all of which require connectivity outside my local network.

There is nothing in my firewall blocking internal attempts to make connections on *any* port to the outside world. However, nearly all ports from the outside are blocked from connecting to me. If this were an issue, I'd sort of expected that some helpful document or forum member might have mentioned such a thing as being a requirement.

Another irritation I've noticed (very likely a result of disabling downloading of content) is that the Tivo's internal web server serves only one page which congratulates me on connecting the tivo to my network, but has no real functionality other than that.

Just now while typing this, the Tivo menu timed out and it went back to displaying video, or tried to. The program description bar popped up telling me I was on AMC watching the Manhattan Project yet the screen was black. Pressing "Live TV" took me to the other tuner which was properly displaying the History Channel, but pressing Live TV again, which would normally switch tuners, went back to the black screen. Changing channels did not resolve it. That tuner only displays the black screen currently, though I hope it's simply because the Tivo knows I'm not recording on the other tuner and therefore have no need to have both active at once. Still, it would have been nice for it to find a way to never show me the black screen at all and make me start worrying about the health of the tuner.

By the way, "It works fine for me" is not a helpful contribution when someone's looking for assistance in resolving a problem. If It *doesn't* work fine for *me* then we've established that something somehow needs to be done to correct the issue, whatever that is.

An attempt just now to force both tuners to record on separate channels results in one tuner recording just fine and the second tuner recording blackness. Fun.

(Last night, the Live TV button swapped tuners just fine, showing whatever was airing on either tuner with no problems. Restarting the TiVo and powering it down had no effect. Telling the TiVo to manually record two simultaneous programs had no effect - the second program was black.)

I have also started seeing that SameGame and the Word game time out when I try to access them. Like Krenath, I can access my network using the TiVo, including connecting to the TiVo Service, Yahoo photos, and movie times.

I played the SameGame when I first got the S3 and it worked fine. But lately it has not worked at all.

I just tried SameGame and a couple of others and get http errors on my S2 running 8.1 so I would say it is a Tivo issue.

My only complaint is my failure to get the TiVo 3 to update via ethernet through my Fios ISP. I can access my picture and music files on my home network with the ethernet connection, but can never find a "gateway" for internet access. I have a modified Series 1 with a turbonet adapter, and have had zero problems updating it via ethernet cable/fios. Why does my Series 1 "sees" the internet and the Series 3 can't? Beat me. Very perplexing.

It's a non-issue now as I purchased a Tivo Wireless unit, and use it to access the internet. Just seems silly to have to fork over the additional $45.

Other than that, I love my Series 3 (and like HookBill, hated my 8300).

    Thos.

Ah, you got me.... ;) I should have specified on the S3... I'll bet that's what "Matt" meant, since it is true that 8.1 has been released...

Actually it does, it tells you that the service isn't down, so you have more troubleshooting to do.

By the time I'm posting here about an issue, I'm beyond trying to determine if it's the service being down (since if it were, there would be a few hundred complaints about it) and now lookng for specific troubleshooting information that might solve the problem for my Tivo.

But, according to Heather on Tivo Tier 2 technical support, the applications on the "Music, Photos, Products, & More" menu (aside from the items that connect you local network computers) connect to a Yahoo! application server. This server experienced a failure on December 29th and has been worked on since that time to restore functionality. It's partially functional now, but some items are still down or intermittent.

A little while ago, the title screen for Skull & Bones managed to pop up, but didn't get any further and then crapped out again.

On a separate problem, the "black screen on my second tuner" issue turns out to apparently be an instance of the "Disappearing Analog Channels" issue that version 8.1 software is supposed to address. Further testing revealed that none of my local cble channels display, but HDTV air channels display fine yet analog air channels also display a black screen.

Heather didn't mention a rollout date for 8.1 and says her information on the topic doesn't specify one, but says she's sure they'll roll it out "soon".

My only real problems are minor, but do frustrate. The first is seeking with FF / RWD. It's relatively ok in HD, but in SD there are major glitches. I'll see this weird multi-colored diagonal line reminiscent of old school channel encryption. It happens about 85% of the time when I fast forward. It is impossible to time the fast forwarding because it is sort of like a gap in time. If I go three frames past it, 30 seconds are bypassed. If I rewind those 3 frames, I end up having to watch a commercial for 25 seconds.

The other is really minor... Tivo online shows channels I don't receive OTA even though I've explicitly uncheck them as channels I receive. I think they are from milwaukee. I live 60 miles away in madison.

Okay, now I just had the pixelation problem reported by others. While watching a show there was sever pixelation accompanied by loss of sound. Eventually the screen froze. I've just done a warm reboot.
