That's what gave it away for me when I watched it last year.
For me it was the scene with the Canadian money.
Before this episode, they have been very careful not to show where they are. They don't have a city name on their uniforms, nor on the precinct. I have never once heard them refer to their location. That's why I assumed that they were trying to make them American. However, with this episode, they showed a city shot to help people 'locate' where it is filmed. As an American who has never traveled to Canada, nor has seen any kinds of skyline shots of major Canadian cities, I had no idea where it was supposed to be.
Also, I've seen the character try to pronounce that word less 'aboot' and more 'about'. Every so often, she falls back on her natural accent, so it comes out more. That's more what I mean by slipping.
I never noticed what kind of currency they were holding. I just don't remember it.
They did show Toronto's most famous landmark in that shot, the CN Tower. Sure, it's not the Stature of Liberty or the Eiffel Tower, but it'd definitely the "postcard" landmark of T.O. BTW, I've been up there, and it's awesome!! So to me, it left NO doubt that this was in Toronto. But I guess they could still hide it and hope that nobody recognized the landmark.
Of course on The Good Wife, a show that is supposed to take place in Chicago, they've shown a few times shots of the NYC Subway in the background (it's filmed in NYC), but as a former New Yorker and living in NJ, I recognized it. Other people might not.
True, but it's a commonwealth crown. That combined with the lack of a significantly different accent pegs it as Canadian.
The Commonwealth of former British colonies.
See, I never noticed the crown. Maybe that makes me a poor citizen of the world. Maybe it just makes me a person with bad vision.
I saw the crown first. The money confirmed it.
For me it was noticing after a few episodes that they were being evasive with what city they were in. Then I started looking carefully for clues.
Sorta like when someone in the closet starts playing the pronoun game.
I don't remember the episode but I remember the scene with the money. They were in an apartment in front of a fireplace painted white and I don't think it was uniformed cops, it was either civilians or undercovers. Anyway, somebody gave somebody else some money, and while it wasn't a close shot or anything, the money was clearly red and purple.
I noticed the crown on the uniforms, but I just figured it was a generic emblem (not uncommon with TV shows).
I don't care where this is filmed. I think it's a great show and I like it.
