Hi all I've read through many threads about migrating recordings to a new drive which all deal with going from a single drive to another single drive.

I have a Roamio running Hydra with a DVR expander. I'd like to move all my recordings to a new, single, larger drive.

Can this be done without losing the recordings? If so, how?

    Thank you.

Moving them off the Roamio is easy with: pyTivo Desktop and its thread: Easier to use pyTivo

Moving them back will be harder. TiVo to TiVo can be done with TiVo Online. I don't know of a way to get them back to TE4 unless you install TE3 on your new drive, then upgrade to TE4. You would have to install the new drive, rollback to TE3, return the files (with Desktop), then upgrade to TE4. Sounds like work.

    Other suggestions may follow.

The weakest link here to me seems returning the files with Desktop to the Tivo.

Read the thread. The pyTiVo version is easy to use. Your PC will display in My Shows at the bottom, and then you just do a transfer. I guess you know copy protected programs are unable to transfer.

    Two potential issues...

    1) This only works if you're still using TE3. There is no way to transfer back if you're running TE4/Hydra

    2) Some data is lost in the TiVo to PC to TiVo transfer, the biggest being the skip data but some shows will have trouble grouping as well.

MFS Tools 3.2 can copy everything to a single drive if it's at least as big as both of your existing drives combined. All 3 drives have to be hooked up to your computer at the same time.

Thanks ggieseke. Can I then pop the new drive right into the Roamio?

Curious, how long has this been the case?

After running the mfscopy command the new drive should drop right in.

I think MFS Tools has always had that capability.

For as long as it has been out. The limitation is that the target image can not be greater than 4 TB so the combined drive size to copy has to be under 4 TB. I am not sure, as I have not tested it, if all the recordings combined are less than 4 TB but the actual combination of drives are greater than 4 TB if it still will work.

Not that I will ever use an external extender system... again.
This is good to know, as there are still some folks that do.
