Come on tivo.. really. Why is a responce to an ICMP ping REQUIRED to 'Successfully connect to the network', especially a ping to an internet site. I can fully justify using ping to verify SOME network connectivity, but how about pinging the Default Gateway.. 99% of university's will block all ICMP traffic from traversing outside their network, and ours happens to be one of them. If I didn't work in the IT Department, I'd have never gotten my tivo to work. The odd thing is that the Series 2 doesn't rely on the response of an ICMP ping. I hope someone at tivo realizes that ICMP packets are starting to be blocked EVERYWHERE, and it will become a major issue when first time customers try to set up a dvr and decide to get the crappy motorola from comcast because 'it just worked the first time I tried it'.
