Greetings to all. I am about to replace the hard drive in my Premiere XL. Do I just put a formatted drive in or will I have to load TiVo software on it. If I need to load software, where do I find it?

You would need to put a same model image on the drive with a program like DVRBars. It also will do the format. You cannot format the drive before placing an image on it. DVRBars will do backup and restore of the Tivo image. If yours is still working, then you can backup it to restore to a new drive.

Recommended drives is the WD Red with model numbers ending in EFRX, Purple drives ending in PURX or PURZ.

    Ha!
I remember when purple drives were thought to not be compatible for TiVo use.

I just sent back a defective Red 3TB drive. I thought SMR drives weren't great for Tivo which my particular model apparently is. I thought about tossing it and getting a better drive but doesn't seem there are any better?

Anyway I will also need an image. Mine is the original Premiere with 2 tuners. If a specific model number is required I can try to get it off the back of the device.

If you looked on the back label, I would bet it would say TCD746320 or TCD746500. The last 3 indicates the OEM drive size in GB.

Thanks I will verify later. It's a 320gb drive. Whioi put back in after the 3tb failed. Been stuck on clear and delete for a couple of weeks now. LoL

    Thanks! I also confirmed that I have a TCD746320.

After I copy the image over do I have to do anything to make it see the full 3TB?

Thought you were back on the original 320GB drive. I just sent you a pre-expanded 3TB image, which should save you the hassle of doing it yourself with MFS Tools 3.2.

Thanks. I put the original 320 back in. But it got stuck.

Will put the last image on the 3tb when I get it back from WD.

There is no guarantee that you will get the same model back from WD.

I did a WD return on a Green 1TB and they sent back to me a Black 1TB which I cannot use in the Tivo.

Guess I will have to see what they send me. If not what should I buy? I am fine with even a 1tb at this point. We have 2 other Tivos so don't need a ton of space.

WD Red drives ending in EFRX (avoid EFAX), Purple ending in PURX, PURZ.

I would suggest upsizing your other Tivos as well, then you would not have to rush to watch shows or have them get deleted when it gets full. Suggest a size of 3TB for them. Roamio is the last and easiest model to upgrade, no image needed, just pop it in and it will prepare it in minutes. Bolts and Edge are harder since they use 2.5 inch drives. V21 Tivo software is also a factor as it dislikes almost all drives except a select few. (Best is v20.7x)

My other Premiere has a 3tb drive. Not going to upgrade the Bolt since as you mention it's hard to find an affordable decent drive.

I got the same model (EFRX) of drive back earlier this week and finally got a chance to copy the 3tb image over to it. Drive is a year old but doesn't say refurb on it. I also put the 320GB image on a 500GB drive I had which worked fine (yes at a reduced capacity). Was able to use the box while waiting on the the 3TB.

Installed the 3TB last night and so far so good. Just have to call the cable company and repair the cable card.

    Thanks ggieseke and ThAbtO.

Hi, I saw this thread and need to replace the hard drive on my Premiere XL. the WD Red ending in EFRX is no longer sold. They now only have EFAX. Do you know if that will work?
