    Hello all,

I had the dreaded tivo gray screen. I tried all the normal troubleshooting. Finally went with the assumption that is was hard drive or power supply. Replaced the hard drive first. No dice. Just replaced the power supply. Tivo still stuck in gray screen that follows start up... thoughts? Assistance?

    thanks

Silly idea, but is it in standby mode? Hit the TiVo button to see if it wakes up.

no such luck... I get the powering up screen then it goes gray and stays there. All front lights remain lit.

Have tried cycling the power supply (both new and old) with and without hard drive attached. Have tried all the obvious troubleshooting methods and a few of the less obvious.

thought I'd try the forum before I gave up and put it in the mail.

    thx

Bad capacitor on board? Look for bulging tops.

I have the same problem. I've been through the same steps. I don't have the unit here now but I'll check for bad capacitor(s).

Try a different video output -- change to composite from component or hdmi

What drive did you install? What procedure did you use?

Also, you can measure the PS voltages going to the HDD. There should be 12V and 5V.

I put in a 1tb wd caviar black drive. I will try the alternate input though seems unlikely.

Anyone know if there is a way to update the software from a usb stick?

Stupid question, did you prepare the new hard drive installing the tivo software?

I think the key here is "All front lights remain lit" That usually indicates a Power Supply failure are you sure the replacement PS is good? are the lights on if you power up without the hard drive connected or powered?

The really bad news is... if the problem is not the PS then it must be the with system board.
