I have a Tivo Series 2 DT. It had been freezing up randomly, and now after cycling power, it simply freezes at the "Welcome. Powering up" screen.

My research thus far tells me that this symptom indicates that the firmware can't read the OS from the hard drive.

This sounds like there's a chance that the recordings and season pass settings might still be recoverable. What's the best course of action here?

The unit is about two years old, which is about the age my previous one died.

If I buy a new TiVo, can I add my old drive to the one that's already in the new unit, and expect TiVo to be able to recognize it? Or, is there a way I can recover the files to my PC and then move them back to my new TiVo?

Thanks for your taking time to read this.

You need Spinrite to check the drive, maybe.

You can try a dd_rescue copy to a good drive.

To recover recordings to your PC, it needs to run in the TiVo.
You cannot just add it to another TiVo, nor should add that small a drive, or a failed or suspect drive.
