We usually watch DVDs rather than TV, so have missed virtually everyone of the hot series shows in quite literally the last 15 years, with the exception of the Sopranos and Boston Legal. Also The Office.

Looking to catch up on some of the finer shows (I have lots of credits at the DVD swap site, swapadvd.com - and as an aside, highly recommend that if you have a bunch of dvds lying around that you're not going to watch again.)

Would love to have recommendations. I'm not into the "odd-offbeat", so I would probably not go with shows like Lost. For some reason, Sex in the City doesn't intrigue.

So far, plan to get Mad Men and Community. Thinking about How I met Your Mother, but some reviews suggest it is just a vehicle for sex jokes. I'm not a prude, but crass shows like Two and A Half Men don't appeal at all. Good writing, good acting instead.

Looking forward to hearing what y'all have to say!

    Trina,
I understand its been awhile, but
could you name your top three tv favorites so your taste is understood?
I think this will help with recommendations.
For instance, I could never watch Buffy, Walking Dead, or True Blood, but there are people who love them. I try to watch for touts from people with the same tendencies in favorites that I have.

Is this just for the adults, or for the adults and the kids?

    The Wire.

    Lost.

I really like The Office, The Sopranos. I tend not to like Sci-Fi and vampire related are like you completely out of the equation. Boston Legal got a bit dull but I do like legal/courtroom stuff.

I also like medical - House is terrific and Scrubs is fun.

I haven't watched Mad Men but I know I will like that. The few shows of Community I watched with my son I liked. I've also liked One Rock, but DH has seen that.

Any thoughts on Community, Parks & Rec, How I met Your Mother?

+1. It's maybe a bit offbeat, but in a movie trivia way. Check out the pilot, although the cast changed one character. You'll probably be hooked by the first 4 shows because overall it's a pretty good show, and probably the best sitcom on TV the last 5 years. Some shows though are rather suspenseful, especially for a comedy.

Another even more silly comedy is Better Off Ted.

Parks & Rec is ok, nothing to write home about. 30 Rock is better.

How I met Your Mother -- I'd skip it -- it's just another sit-com -- you're not missing anything there.

But the three I posted above are way above and beyond these sit-coms.

We are now in season 7 and it's still funny as ever! Very adult, messed up, and off-beat. Hilarious!

I'm repeating a few, but shows with outstanding first seasons:

    Veronica Mars
    24
    Prison Break
    Justified

Also recommend Better Off Ted, Burn Notice, Psych, Suits, Royal Pains, Monk, and really almost anything on USA.

I love Parks & Rec but the first season was rough. Thankfully only six episodes. You have to commit to the first two seasons on that one.

I do love Community but I find it can get uneven. Season 1 was more consistent than 2.
