Reboots Mysteriously Resolved... For Now

    I posted my problems somewhere in the initial reboot thread, an R10 began rebooting long before 6.3 to the point of not being able to use the thing. After triggering several full thumbs list scratches and in frustration, I hooked up the phone line several times and eventually got the 6.3 after at least two months of aggravation. Even after 6.3, reboots continued. That was early September.

    Now we are about two weeks beyond the last reboot and about three weeks beyond last call. So this cessation was not directly triggered by phone connect. One of the residual fallouts is that some folders have been duplicated. Old ones are still good and new ones function normally. We are still holding our breath (and getting very red!) but this box has apparently self healed. I'm sure the bad disk folks are going to suggest that bad spot has simply been occupied by something that is being used, but I was never a subscriber to the bad disk thing anyway as I think that's usually a very terminal condition. And in many cases did not solve the reboot problem anyway.

    There may be hope yet!

    Not exactly. It is quite possible that, as a computer would, your unit has "learned" where the bad sector is and no longer uses it. The software is capable of doing that.

    There are, clearly, problems with the 6.3e upgrade (Since declaring it to be all disk related, I have had two problems with one unit. Two programs have failed to record because there was "no signal." There clearly was signal. And, I've noticed that in the Channel List setup feature, I can not directly go to a channel by punching in the number. Any number I punch in brings me to channel 2, the top of the list.)

    Yours, however, is clearly not 6.3e related since, by your own reporting, the problem precedes the update. It surely does sound, in that case, like a hard drive issue. I don't see what else you think it could be.

    Not a matter of if, but when. That hard drive will die soon. A day, a week, a month, you never know.

    Plan ahead.

    I have backup hard drives imaged and ready to swap for both my DTivos. A drive swap won't have me down for more than 10 minutes.

    Same exact thing here with 6.3e and the channel setup going to the lowest number when you punch in another number.

    I have had the same problem with a Tivo remote with the 1 - 2 switch but the problem does not occur when when using the Directv peanut remote. Both work on all other functions. Are you using Directv remote and do you have a clear line of sight to the Tivo, not going through any glass? I have noticed going through glass can cause problems. :confused:
