I'm pretty new to D* and today I got a new message telling me about my reciever not being able to phone home. Can I ignore this message? I'm disconnected my landline on Friday so I want have a way for it to phone home after then.

Your DVR will continue to function just fine except that you will not be able to order PPV with the remote or activate any software updates (most likely there are no more software updates). After 30 days you will get a daily nag message that you can delete.

I get that message after like 3 weeks from making a connection. It gets annoying because when I press the List button to see my recorded shows, i get the message about the phone call.

So when it starts to get annoying, i bring out this long 25 feet cable and make the call.

My R10 was disconnected from the phone line for a few months. I don't order
pay-per-view with the remote, so everything worked just fine. A tad slow,
    but working fine.

Then I started to get the nag message twice in one day. I'd delete the
message and then when I hit the 'list' button it would show me the nag
message again so I'd delete it again. I called DTV.

DTV told me in so many words that my DVR was 'constipated' with three
months of viewing information and it needed to take a dump. Hooking it
up to the phone line 24/7 would solve the problem.

I got fed up with the nag message a couple days ago and forced it to make
the phone call. I noticed that it went through a "housekeeping" step before
dialing. Finally, when the call was complete, it began to display a kind of
progress monitor. 10% done, 30% done and ultimately 100% done - like
it was unzipping a file, or installing software or a patch?

After the call was completed, the strolling performance was gone. Commands
from the remote control were lightning fast compared to before the call. FYI

So software updates come through the phone line?

I've got version 6.1-01-2-521. Is that the latest?

My former HDVR2 shipped with s/w version 3. It received v6.2 via the phone line.

My R10 came out of the box with s/w version 6.1 installed and it is still running v6.1.

6.1 is the correct version for a R10. It's functionally identical to the 6.2 version running on my Series2 DTivo's.

    Outback Paul:
When you have your phone line ready, plug in your R10 and
force it to make the call, if you like.

I'm also running software v6.1-01-2-521. And having forced my
R10 to make it's phone call a couple days ago I suspect that
    version is the latest.
