Some people say Radio Shack is still surviving but in reality it's just a name and a tiny shell of what it used to be. It's basically just a place for cheesy cables, antennas and cheap accessories. TiVo will probably be around for a long long time but will it be the TiVo that we know today? The question of will TiVo survive can have a lot of answers depending on what's meant by surviving.

No one considers Radio Shack to be surviving. And, basically, TiVo still sells and supports a DVR that does what DVRs do, so I’d say the comparison is not appropriate.

To be fair, he asked in the future tense, "Will it be the TiVo that we know today?" I personally don't think TiVo has transformed away from its roots to the extent that RadioShack already has, but it may be heading in that direction, becoming "a shell of what it used to be".

TiVo is getting out of the hardware-making business all together this year. They're actively exploring changing ownership hands yet again. And if what makes a TiVo a TiVo is really its combination of distinctive software/UI plus high-quality reliable guide data, but those things have significantly changed to become more like everything else out there, well, it may all add up to a "jump the shark" moment for TiVo's retail business.

Even I would not tell them to abandon it. Even I am not that ridiculous. I do wish they would put out a new manual that was more detailed, other than the horrible one they have now. Could they get some of the graphics of the Important screens any darker?:rolleyes::rolleyes:

Sometimes I really want to pull the trigger, but NAW!!! The only thing holding me back is lack of updates (still) AND NO LIVE GUIDE. I know I hear things about this Mini Guide, which is not even mentioned in their "user guide"...

    HAIL HYDRA NOT (yet)!

Amazing if you go to any forum for any product (TV, Computer, smart phone, etc.) you will see a very similar thread. I'm not saying that there aren't significant issues with new releases but the world is ending and the sky is falling seems to be for every technology product

Two earnings calls ago the new CEO said they were exploring various strategic options for the company since the stock price was (according to them) undervalued. Options included both making a significant strategic acquisition and also going private or selling. The most recent earnings call he said the strategic review process was still underway.

Ah. So basically, something that companies forever are considering, albeit perhaps a level above given the stock matter.

Exactly, they took one step further by publicly engaging an advisor and inviting all comers to make a pitch one way or the other.

So, are we keeping our TiVo's, because I just got my first one and now I don't know if it's any good or not.

I am, companies go through this all the time and this news doesn't change the landscape that much for end users. CEOs have to appear to do something when stock is so much lower than expectations.

For whatever it's worth, people have been wondering if TiVo would be around for much of its life, around 21 years now (boxes out for 19). ;)

I have not used the Hydra UI so I could not vote in my poll. I have not been on this site for maybe half a year or more. Stopped everything in my life to go back to my homeland to take care of my sick Mom for 7 months. I have been wanting to purchase a new 2 Tivo to replace older units that failed to operate. From what I can tell from here and Amazon reviews that the new UI has not been a slam dunk or a grand slam and likely far from both. If anybody wants to sell a Roamio (model TCD846500) please message me directly. Bonus if it has a lifetime sub.

    Thanks!

That's very useful info. thank you.

I hope they acquire a company known for building great User Interfaces that are also very customer focused.

Those overvalued companies are often the companies that nearly everybody is a customer of; because they focus on high-quality (meaning not releasing obvious bugs) usable and efficient (customer) User interfaces; and they deliver the service or product to the customer without a lot of problems.

And if there is a problem, their customer support goes to great lengths to make sure you feel supported and valued.

If the Rovi Corporation did this nobody then would be disappointed.

Here is short list of the people who are failing to run a perfectly good company after it became their responsibility:
    Management Team | TiVo

Did anybody on this team have any notable successes before this project?

    Microsoft killed good acquisitions too.
    Remember the Sidekick?
    That only cost ~450 mil.
    Tivo cost Rovi 1.1 billion.

Hey! Maybe they could just make money defending their massive portfolio of patents and not worry about those silly customers? Life is sweet in the C-suite! :)

IIRC a lot of folks thought that was mostly what TiVo was doing pre-Rovi. No?

The issue here is Tivo still the best of available options? In my opinion, the cable companies are still overpriced (monthly) and technologically inferior. I'm paying 9.95 for a Roamio Plus. Cant beat that. Plus it has more features than anything i know. Directv may have something nice at a large monthly cost

That's where some say most of the profit was coming from.
