On my cable company DVR if I was tuned to a channel and the buffer had been saving the show for a while and I decided I wanted to keep it I could just hit the record button and it would record the show from the beginning (or to the beginning of the buffer) and keep it.

It seems that the TiVo doesn't work this way. Last night I had one of the tuners on a show and when I went to it about 20 minutes were showing on the bar. So I hit record and told it to record that show and I ended up with only 10 minutes. Actually what it did was recorded the last 10 minutes of that show and the first 20 minutes of the next one. Note that was recorded on a QAM channel so there was no guide data. Is this normal?

From my experience, if you hit record while watching live TV it will save the part of the buffer only related to the show you are watching. I think the no guide data is your issue there. Without guide data the Tivo has no idea what is actually being watched.

Nice username by the way. Probably my favorite of all the Met cover tunes.
