I'm FINALLY back on TiVo (after 5 or 6 years in DirecTV land with their HD DVR which wasn't that bad and about a month on Comcast's DVR - blech).

For what it's worth, I got lifetime on my Premiere this way. I have a friend with a "full price qualifying sub", I got him to activate the TiVo (just by using the service number). The next day I called TiVo and had them transfer it to my account. He verified that it was calling in from my zip code and said no problem and we were done.

It still shows up under my friend's account, but I have full access to it on my account.

No idea if this reduces the number of MSD discounts he can claim. Also, since this TiVo Lifetime sub wasn't full price, I can't get any MSD discounts on future TiVo's.

I've always wondered about the 5 Tivo limit for MSD.
I can only see two ways to perpetually keep getting MSD.

A). When you reach the limit, I would think your next Tivo w/lifetime would have to be full price. You then get another 5 MSD discounts.

B). You create multiple accounts at tivo.com.

Either way, you have to pay full price lifetime for some of the Tivos.

The 5 limit is for one TiVo account, 1 TiVo at full lifetime price (like an old Series 2) then you can purchase 5 more new TiVos at the MSD service price. If you sell/give one away so its not in your account than you can purchase another MSD TiVo service contract.

That would make sense, but some people report that sold/inactive Tivos remain in their account. I guess you can call TiVo and have them removed?

That is a problem that can't be solved without a lot of work on TiVos part, and you have a loss of all purchase history. The way I did it was to create another TiVo account and have a TiVo CSR move all the active TiVos into that new account, than after a day or so I changed the name of my original TiVo account (now having only TiVos that were in other TiVo accounts) to any say Red Dead at some other address and changed the E-Mail address to fake567@gmail.com. I went back to my active TiVo account and put all the original correct information in that account. Order history was all I lost and I don't need that information. The process is a pain and I don't know if the TiVo CSRs will still do it as I did this a few years ago.
