Could someone explain the basics? I know that you download it, but what next? How does it work? Does your pc have to be on, when you use the Tivo?

Yes, the computer must be on and running for the Tivo to be able to see/transfer from it.

    For pyTivo Desktop:

Quite candidly, you easily can go through it's various settings tabs/pages once you have it up and running to see if you need/want to further personalize anything, and to get a pretty good idea how it operates.

Computer set as file server. Multiple folders, e.g., TV, Movies, etc., your choice. Use with MG3 to create folder on TiVo to mirror computer folders.

The link to get MG3 is in my signature. Unfortunately there is no user guide for it, because I'm lazy and not sufficiently altruistic.. ;)

Can you transfer non-Tivo videos, like mp4?

Once you have transferred the files to the Tivo unit, you can turn off the pc and just use the Tivo?

Yes. The file will remain on the TiVo until deleted.

Essentially, what transfer actually means is copy. So, you would have a copy of the show on both Tivo and Computer.
