I ran the Western Digital "Data Lifeguard Tools" and all passed. I also ran Kickstart # 54 which did all its test and my drive all passed. I also performed just about all of the Kickstart functions too. Is it the drive that is the problem or the fact that the Premier XL sat disconnected for some time?

i'm guessing at this point it has to do with the software version of the image. again, guessing, if the software version isn't at least 20.7.4.rc42 or greater, premieres are getting stuck in a guided setup boot loop. iirc, the image being used is ver. 20.7.1.

from another thread, @lucho says he has a pxl image on dropbox that may get you past the loop, you can send him a pm:

HELP! Tivo Premiere stuck in guided setup loop?

In my experience it was because it sat disconnected for some time. Then it behaved exactly as yours does. The cause could be something on a board in there, and not the drive or software at all.

if it were only disconnected premieres having trouble, i'd be more willing to agree, but even more users are having the same guided setup boot loop issue after re-imaging drives, so i'm beginning to lean towards a software upgrade issue from tivo servers at this point.

You may be right. TiVo seems ever more clumsy in that way. But I'll never know: at this point I've thrown mine into a box headed for our local electronics recycling event, without even trying to sell it to Weaknees or some unsuspecting eBay buyer.

Pokemon_Dad, if you still have the box, I like to buy it from you, for more testing, I think it maybe a software and/or hardware issue. At first my box did the setup loop all the time. I did try some reflow on the main cpu, and it seems it help a bit.

I can't handle shipping it, but if you're in the Bay Area maybe we can work something out. Even with recycling available, throwing out electronics seems like such a waste.

I had the same issue trying to reinstall the original drive in my premiere. I requested an image from this forum and re imaged the drive and the drive was able to complete guided setup.

Success! Thank you, lucho, for the image!

    I think there are three reasons it worked after days of other efforts;
    1. The image lucho sent worked where ggieseke's image did not.
    or
    2. When I used lucho's image I did the long complete restore. I don't remember if I did the complete restore or the briefer restore previously. Perhaps the long restore wipes areas of the hard drive where previously my hard drive had bad data.
    or
    3. Using both lucho's image and the long restore in combination worked.

In any case after several days of efforts including using Western Digital's hard drive tools, Kickstarting every code, and restoring the image -all to no avail- I finally got it to work again.
    Thanks all.

I don't remember exactly what version was my bad Hard drive but it was before 20.7
I was lucky to make a backup before any update. I really spend a lot of time trying to make the image I downloaded from this forum to work, but no success. Then I realized the bad Hard Drive worked still.
