If you mean it is like the video is paused and but the sound still goes on the yes. A reboot usually fixes it but it still happens from timed to time. Another issue i have is that the screen starts jumping every now and then when I change the channel. When I hit skip it goes back to normal.

I've had my Tivo S3 HD for 13 months and never had a single problem...until now!

My S3 is unusable right now. It's been in a constant re-boot cycle and in most cases it didn't get to the main menu before it rebooted again. I finally got to the main menu this morning and was able to navigate around. I was surprised to see that my Tivo still successfully connect for it's daily update, even though it looked like it was frozen.

I decided to leave it alone for a week and just run basic cable to my TV for now.

I called Tivo Support on Monday and they acknowledged the problem. I called again today and they confirmed that there is no ETA to fix it.

Totally unacceptable!!! What are other people hearing from Tivo?

I know what you're talking about with the freezes on digital television; I see this sometimes on my FIOS and previously on my Comcast screen. But, the S3 freezing issue is a completely different issue. It's not the channel that freezes but the actual box - it just goes into a continuous reboot cycle. I've already had to replace my box due to this issue. I record OTA - so its not a cable card issue for me either.

If this is a software issue, Tivo better gets it act together quickly. I was outside 90 days so I had to pay the $69 +shipping replacement process - we shouldn't have to pay anything for TIVO's pushing out a faulty software.

I must admit I'm surprised that this poll is even close to 60-40! This seems like a serious problem. I'll be interested to see if things improve for the Tivo HD owners after 9.4 arrives. I'm not holding out much hope for my occasional S3 freezes (even with new hard drive), which seems like an HDMI handshake problem, being fixed by 9.4.

My Series 3 has a non-TIVO external drive and I assumed the occasional reboots were because of this.
Today, after the new software update, I tried to watch Jay Leno recorded Monday and tuesday. The TIVO showed 1 hour of content for each show but gave me a message that there was no signal when recording. This was cured by rebooting.
The usual freezes were with a with a fatal error message which the machine said it would try to fix but it would take up to 3 hours. After 10 minutes it was always fixed.
From this board, I assume replacing the external non-supported hard drive and cable will be a waste of money.

It would be worth replacing the e-sata cable. I had a problem develop after three months and replacing the cable cleared it up. See III.26 of the 1st post.

The recommended eSATA cable for the TiVo is the SIIG CB-SA0111-S1 (1m). This cable is available in 1m and 2m versions from Provantage.com (1m, 2m), Buy.com (1m, 2m), Amazon.com (1m, 2m), and TheNerds.net (1m, 2m). This cable "snaps" in to provide a firm connection.

The Tripp-Lite P950 eSATA cable is also confirmed to work with the TiVo. This cable doesn't fit as "snugly" as the SIIG above, so it is more prone to come lose if you are reaching around (or moving) your equipment. You can order it in 0.5m (18") and 1.0m (36") lengths for about $6 from Provantage.com (0.5m, 1.0m), Buy.com (0.5m, 1.0m) and TheNerds.net (0.5m, 1.0m).

Mine has fixed itself or at least the 9.4 update has had a positive effect. It has run for days now without failing.

I'm on my third S3 Tivo. The first two each lasted 10 months before freezing up and rebooting constantly. I had an eSATA drive on each, but they still locked up and rebooted even after I disconnected it.

Granted, this poll is probably skewed towards those who have problems, but 40% of respondents having problems on a product that hasn't even been out two years yet is insane! My personal experience is 67% (so far), but I had previously just assumed I was unlucky.

I really hope Tivo can find a fix soon. They can't afford to have a reputation for making POS boxes.

I am in the group of folks who have had freezing/rebooting problems. Have a stock S3 that started random reboot cycles about a month ago. Watching non-HD live content only seemed to alleviate the problem, but eventually the S3 became unusable. I have since replaced the internal HDD with a 500GB Seagate DB35, and so far so good.

I am afraid that what I have done is only a temporary fix, however. I hope that 9.4 addresses the issue and doesn't contribute to bricking another HDD.

I had the problem and it seems to be fixed after removing my expansion disk as described here.

A few months ago my S3 started getting occasional freezes seem when first turning on the TV and bringing the Tivo out of Standby. I reprogrammed my Logitech Harmony remote to STOP putting the Tivo into standby mode when "switching it off", and the problem has NOT reoccurred since.
