I've been dealing with this problem off and on for about a month.

I think one major issue is that the software only allows one computer to be linked to your account? I'm using the Plus version BTW.

I constantly would get the Unable to link to your tivo account error message. After reading these posts I tried something that allowed me to get an error message saying that the account was linked to a different computer and it asked me if I'd like to link to this one instead. To get to that point, I had to:
Check the firewall settings on the computer I was trying to link. It had plenty of exceptions for the Tivo Desktop.
I then disabled my Router's firewall for just that PC.
I then tried to link, (and the server was "Paused" at the time.)
That's when I got the message about a prior linked PC.

I'm now connected fine and am about to try turning the firewall back on now that the machine is linked. It may turn out that I have to configure the router later to continue to allow connection. I doubt it, but I'll find out....

    P.S.
Just realized. Maybe when people have called support and somehow things got fixed, perhaps someone cleared their account on the server and it just assumed this was the first time the machine was linking?

Let me start off by saying that all of this is above my personal level of understanding, so I don't have any answers to provide.

I have been asked to pass along a request so that others with more knowledge than I can see what happens. Please try the following from a command window and reply with results.
    regsvr32 -i "C:\Program Files\TiVo\Desktop\Plus\comcrypt.dll"

    Hi, TiVoJerry.

I tried the command-line specified above on my Vista Home Premium (SP1) machine where I am having the linking issue and received the following message:

I have UAC disabled, but just in case I tried opening the command-prompt "as administrator" and tried the command again with the same results.

    Hope this helps.

Sounds pretty much like the same thing Vista game me. Hopefully this is helpful to the TiVo engineers.

Sorry for not knowing this beforehand, but I'm told this message will be shown despite the fact that comcrypt.dll will be registered anyway. comcrypt.dll was not designed for manual registration.
    Step to follow
    1. regsvr32 -u "C:\Program Files\TiVo\Desktop\Plus\comcrypt.dll"
    2. Run TD. Plus upgrade will be deactivated. Exit TD.
    3. regsvr32 -i "C:\Program Files\TiVo\Desktop\Plus\comcrypt.dll"
    4. Run TD. Try activate. Activation will be successful. Exit TD.

    Lemme know if that helps.

TiVoJerry ... no luck. I followed your steps and as you indicated, Plus was deactivated and then I was able to re-activate it. But I still cannot link my account.

I wasn't having a problem with Plus ... just the account linking piece. It's doing the same thing as before: I put in my MMA e-mail address and password, click Next and immediately the dialog appears saying "failed to link" asking me to try again but the button on that dialog doesn't do anything so I have to click cancel.

windracer, ty to use TivoDesktopCleaner with option /all:

    TivoDesktopCleaner /all

It will remove TivoDesktop with ALL settings, including PLUS, MAK, all subscriptions. Then install 2.6.2 from the scratch, upgrade to the PLUS, try linking again. The Desktop engineers believe there is a strong chance this process would resolve your issue.

I've tried the TD Cleaner multiple times before ... but I'll give it another shot with the /ALL option and let you know.

Sorry, TiVoJerry, no luck. The uninstall/clean went fine. Installation went fine. I had to re-upgrade to Plus as you indicated. Then when I go to link my account, the same thing happens: I immediately get the "can't link" dialog and the Next button on that dialog does nothing so I have to cancel. Here's what I see in the log:

Still looks like problems with comcrypt?

And you're trying to install 2.6.2, not reinstall 2.6.1?

Yes, all of my attempts have been with 2.6.2. I'll double-check again tonight but I'm pretty sure I've got the current installer.

I did everything one last time:

    - uninstalled TiVo Desktop
    - ran TiVoDesktopCleaner /all
    - rebooted, disabled firewall
    - downloaded TD 2.6.2 fresh from tivo.com
    - installed TD 2.6.2
    - upgraded to Plus
    - attempted to link account, same problem

Same stuff in the log as before:

    Code:

Completely understandable. I appreciate you taking the time to put all this info in here. I've been passing it along to the desktop team.

Has there been any update on this?? I had problems with 2.7 on Vista... just tried upgrading to 2.8, and I am still having the same problems!!! Unable to link to account. This is unbelievably frustrating.

No problem here with 2.8 on Windows 7 64 bit. This thread is a year and a half old, so it seems it hasn't been much of a problem for most people since then either.

Perhaps if you detail your issue, people here can help you troubleshoot it.

By the way, one thread is enough, there is no need to post the same thing in different threads.

To follow-up - I figured out what the problem is. It appears that Tivo Desktop cannot link to a Tivo account that has a username that has an UNDERSCORE in it. My Tivo account username (my email address) had an underscore in it. As soon as I changed it to an account without an underscore, it started working.

So note to Tivo -- you've got a special character problem (underscores!) in your Tivo Desktop code somewhere.

Further to Osterber's post I have also found that having special characters in your password can also cause this problem. In my case it was the & symbol.

Personally I think its ridiculous that the TiVo accounts promote and allow strong passwords including special characters but they don't work when trying to link the TiVo Desktop to your TiVo account.

Hope this helps someone else and prompts TiVo to look into the issue further.

For the benefit of all who follow after, I submit the following unlikely solution that worked for me after four days of reading and trying everything else failed.

The solution for "unable to link to your tivo account" is simply:

Type your email address in all capitals such as in NAME@DOMAIN, example:

    NAME@GMAIL.COM
