I'll bet if he caught scurvy he'd board a plane and fly somewhere just to spread the disease to the passengers and crew of the airplane.

Burnett said on the TV Guide preview that they didn't do the Walk the Plank because he thought it was too cheesy and he wants the ending to feel more dramatic. To make viewers almost feel sorry for the person which he thought wouldn't happen if they had to walk the plank.

Isn't being cut adrift what mutineers usually do with the captain though? That means it's more realistic as well.

    - Mark (who's only knowledge of how mutiny works comes from the Mutiny on the Bounty movie.)

I agree that it seemed a little staged. I especially noticed it during the voting scene with how they were all talking a little bit too much like pirates. I wonder if there is a reunion show if we will be able to see their true personalities or if we will continue to get their pirate talk.
It looked like Louis was doing a Rupert impression complete with the laugh.
And why didn't we hear from some of the crew at all? The blond guy with dreds-did they show us his name at all? There was also a girl with brown hair who I noticed during the voting scene that I didn't remember seeing before when I saw it.
I'm a sucker for reality TV, so I'm sure I'll continue to watch. There do seem to be some interesting twists and turns.

much like Survivor, the person that gets the most screen time is usually the one voted out...

I actually liked John, myself. Yeah, a bit arrogant, but so what? And he was basically right, he was doing everything that episode. The other idiot couldn't find the lock, and then he found the chest. At least he was useful, unlike "Ms. Puke and Do Nothing".

I'd have voted her off immediately. John can stay around and be useful for a while, then you can cut him adrift.

There better be more rules than what we've seen, otherwise the Captain power is way too strong.

I think that John did get voted out unfairly. He should have presented his case better (I say from safe at home and not on a pirate ship). I think people felt forced into something they didn't want to do with the whole compass thing, but I wish he would have presented that case.

"I don't need your compasses. And I don't need you."

Yes this is definetely something I would not admit to watching it public. This is cheesier than Temptation Isand.

Hey, we will hire John to work in our Physics department if he promises to visit the library often. :)

I work in the library and eye candy is always welcome.

Just watched last night and actually enjoyed it. I'm still a little confused on the rules and wish they would have explained them better, but I'm sure they'll come out as the game progresses. I think it will be really interesting to see how the strategy works and how the players figure it out.

Some of the boat shots had to be done with crane cams, but in the long shots of the ship, we didn't see any cranes. I wonder if they do that "Pirate Court" thing while tethered to another ship or while docked somewhere.

I vividly remember the first time I saw an episode of Survivor. (Maybe the second or third one aired.) I thought it was unwatchably bad. Slow, cheesy, scripted, formulaic. But I tuned in the next week anyway. I couldn't stop watching. (Like everybody else in America, apparently.)

Anyway, this was easily as good as that was. Mark Burnett knows what he is doing. The strategy here could get really interesting. It's not great now, but I think this will be a good show.

I watched the whole thing and I gotta say it got better.

In the end... I thought John was smart to take the compasses. But he had to go. If he stayed, he'd have been pushing a mutiny the whole time. The blonde dude with dreadlocks has to go just based on looking stupid.

What's the deal with the women in bikinis? I'm pretty sure no woman dressed like that on a pirate ship.

Next Week on Pirate Master! - In a surprise twist, the male pirates take the female pirates as prize booty. Confusion reigns as pirates debate the correct order for pillaging, sacking, and .... snuggling! ;)

Finally saw it. It was pretty bad the first half of the show, but it did get better the second half.

As the captain, I probably would have split the bounty with the others. They said he could do with it what he wanted, and people are likely not to vote you off if you are giving them gold. :) There is a prize at the end of the game for the winner, so any of the booty (not the bikini type) should be considered as bribes to keep folks voting you off. :)

John was certainly strange and socially inept, but he did look strong. Since it's a Burnett production, I'm thinking athleticism is going to come in handy and maybe it was a mistake to get rid of him so early. Maybe not though - the most obnoxious usually go first, and this time it appeared to be John.

Do we know that there is a prize at the end? I was under the impression that what is available as "booty" throughout the episodes will total $1 million and they could earn as much or as little of it as possible, simply by playing the game.

Perhaps I'm wrong, but either way, it will be interesting to see what happens in Ep. 2.

My instinct also was to be a lot more generous than JP. Like with that captain's quarters, why be so exclusionary about it? I would have invited everyone in, let them hang out, maybe rotate who gets to sleep in there sometimes. Keep everyone fat & happy and they will be less likely to mutiny, right? And that wouldn't even involve giving any money away. But I also thought maybe I'd set up some sort of fair way to let the crew earn more money -- effort bonuses? loyalty bonuses? Spread the money around, make people feel like you are a fair leader and there is something in it for them.

There are a lot of strategic options, for sure. I'm interested to see how it all shakes out.

not sure this is a spoiler, but just in case, here's the answer

they said on the preview show on TV guide channel that each challenge would be for money (just like the first one, but I assume the value will change each time)...they also said the final treasure would be for half a million...

I wonder (suspect) that the producers stongly influenced the behavior of the captain and officers. Had the captain been diplomatic and stragecally smart, there would have been very little conflict and drama, as everyone would be happy. The way it is, there's all kinds of stories to tell, as each member of the crew can't wait for their chance to knock JD off.
