I recently moved to Maine and Spectrum (TWC) as my provider. I have a series 5, as required with Spectrum I have a Cisco Tuning adapter in the mix. My problem is I have a handful of channels (5 or 6) with terrible picture quality. It looks like its a SD feed being stretched to 1080i

Any thoughts ? Many thanks, apologies if this question was discussed in another thread could not find it.

Find a one hour recording that looks bad. Move right. Hit Info. Scroll down. How large is the program? Something around 5GB is (sadly) normal anymore. Used to be over 8GB.

For fun, just checked The Blacklist from Friday night on NBC, 3 GB.

That's not good. My NBC and CBS channels used to be really good. Then they added 3 sub-channels each. The Blacklist on my box is 4.52GB. My ABC channel is the worst.

Agreed. Definitely getting worse over time. For comparison, I have a Wheel of Fortune from 1/7/2014 that I've saved, 7.5 GB per hour rate. Sampling a few of the cable channels, they still appear to be in the 5 GB per hour range, except the Fox NFL game which I just checked, 8 GB per hour. (This is on Spectrum cable.)

All of this (along with price and TiVo ads of course) are making me move more and more viewing to YouTube TV. At least currently, the picture quality on YTTV is excellent.

    1. Make sure you have your TV aspect ratio set to FULL. Some TVs have a separate setting for each input.
    2. Make sure the Tivo Aspect is set to PANEL. (Press ZOOM to cycle).
    3. Uncheck channels that you have copies of in channels list, trading lower channels for higher ones. (Network HD channels are usually in the 700s or 1000s.)
    4. Press GUIDE, then (A)Options and under Channels: choose Channels I Receive, or Favorites. (Favorites are channels you give a  on each channel in the Channels List.)

You would need to use the TV's remote to check/see the aspect. Some have a format button, or in info button.

Roamio can upconvert to 1080p and it can be set in the Tivo video setup. Be sure to test each resolution prior and check only the highest resolution the TV can handle, not auto.

If you press Info while tuned to a questionable channel, you would see the resolution of it. 480i, 720p or 1080i are the most common.

If you view a 480i (SD) channel and the Tivo has the 480i checked, then you would be viewing it in 480i (SD) and see the bad and grainy video. With Tivo set just to 1080p, everything gets upconverted to 1080p and the picture is better.

Without the stations call letters it's impossible to compare bit rates. My "best" channel was ESPN at 11.6Mbps. I get my NBC content from WBRE. My cable feed doesn't mess with the signals. All my basic cable channels are better than the broadcast channels but not by much.

Depends on the quality of the TV being used; some TV's do a (much) better job of upconverting (SD channels) than most settop boxes, including Tivo's.
The OP should try unchecking AUTO, check all resolutions (allowing Tivo to passthru the original resolution) & see if his TV does better...it does in my case.
This IS one of the main reasons why I like using Tivo over Comcast's X1 boxes, as none offer P/T mode. (but their old Moto/I-guide boxes still do... ;) )

My Roamio receives OTA at 480i, 720p or 1080i and I only have 1080p checked and sent to the TV.

The reason I only chose 1080p is it upconverted and reduces the blanking whenever I change channels or recordings. In essanence, it reduces the blanking time VS. having the TV change resolutions all the time.

Are you saying your TV remote does not have a Format or Info button?

NBC is WICU 12 in Erie, PA for me. I don't think Spectrum does anything to the bitrates, but can confirm for sure come January when I go OTA.

Please come back and post. Your station also has 4 subs, so what's the current bit rate?

Just a quick update, after another visit by Spectrum (TWC) , new cable card and a check of the tuner , review of the setting , complete reload of the cable guide, the issues remains. 5 to 6 Channels continue to be received in 480i.
