I tried to search for this, but hope some kind soul who knows will provide the answer. In ancient times when I used to upgrade my Series 2 Tivos, you had to make the first connection to Tivo during setup using a land phone line. After that, you could network the Tivo. Is this still true for Series 3 and beyond? I'm specifically interested in Tivo HD TCD652160.

    Thanks....

No it's not true any longer, a network connection is fine for the first setup.

Thanks Resist. Do you know if a phone is still needed for Series 2 Tivos? I still have one of those going too, along with a pair of HD Tivos.

All Tivos Series 2 and above can use the network, not just for guide data, but more. The Premiere does not have a modem built-in and must use a phone adapter from tivo.com.

Thanks but I'm clear on getting guide data, etc. But first-time guided setup always required one initial phone call on Series 2s, then you could use broadband to make all subsequent connections.

I thought all Series 2 Tivo's required a phone line "initial" setup connection, but I'm not 100% sure.

The older Series 2's software did not have support for the network adapter out of the box. The phone connection was to download the new version of software that had support for the USB network adapter. The Series 2 DT and newer have the network support out of the box.

It depends on the version of software that you use to image the upgrade drive. I can't tell you which S2 version of software first incorporated the network capability but it is highly unlikely that anyone would still have that as an image. I do know from personal experience that version 7 and above work just fine. S3 and Premiere Tivos are not an issue.

It think versions 7.2 and later could have network setup in Guided setup. If you install an image of that, you are good.

I think version 4.x/5.x, you could use an Ethernet adapter supported in that version, with the ",#401" prefix.

Any version 3.0 or later supports Serial PPP, except on the HD models.

I think the USB network adapter support was available starting with Version 3.0 by using the dialing prefix ,#401. You need at least version 7 to use the wireless adapter.

Thank you everyone for the info. It sounds like I should not need a phone line because I would be imaging my own Series 2 which has the latest software version 9.3.xxx. And my HD Tivos sound like they're good no matter what.

I now have one less use for my overpriced phone line.
