I didn't know that Raymond Burr was gay. You learn something new every day. As far as "woke-ness" vs. "modernization", I'm pretty sure that there were gay and black people in America way back then and life pretty much sucked for them. Might as well portray that in a re-telling of the story.

It was fun watching Hamilton Burger explain to Perry Mason why Perry Mason tactics don't actually work. :D

Sad to see Strickland going to the other side. Also I guess this means no Sister Alice in season two. Certainly didn't end like I expected it to which isn't necessarily bad. At least Ennis got what was coming to him.

Interesting wrap-up in that from my understanding (I never watched the original series) this was the anti-Perry Mason. I get the impression that the original series was all about neatly wrapping everything up by the end of the hour (usually by Mason getting a confession out of the killer on the stand). None of that in 2020! Nobody ended up very happy...except maybe Della and Paul, who are both definitely in a better place than they were to begin with.

The theme song returns! That was the one thing I wanted for the finale.

Yeah they definitely fooled me. I kept waiting on him to call Ennis at the last minute and actually get the confession out of him that Burger was insisting he couldn't get...... considering the only thing I know about previous PM shows was that was the gimmick. Nice way to thwart our expectations! Now since this is wrapped for the season, I am off to start The Americans. I really like Matthew Rhys acting so looking forward to seeing how different the characters are.

I thought PM and the Sister were going to hook up there for a second.

First he cheats on the bar exam, then he bribes a juror? Really?

Did he do that? Or did his (ex-) flunky do it on his own? I wasn't entirely clear on that...

No, he had to ask him to do it (that is what they were talking about on the bridge “I am almost out of options”).

Oh! I thought he was referring to putting Emily on the stand.

I'm pretty sure that he'd already put her on the stand before that scene.

I kept waiting for something to happen in court to figure out what they were talking about. I was truly surprised by the reveal, I had not even considered that option.

However, I did really love it. That, and also cheating the bar. Great stuff. I very much enjoyed this season and can't wait for the next one (but, with Covid, it seems we'll have to wait for a good while :( )

I was happy that he gave up on keeping his house. That storyline started well (the sex scenes were particularly hilarious) but dragged a good bit at the end.

One thing I didn't figure out is why Ennis was killed at the end. I guess it was just that his partner thought he was a loose cannon and could get them all into trouble with his "extra-curriculars", so he agreed with the casino owner to take him out?

No, you're incorrect. That conversation was immediately before flashing to her on the stand. Either way, looking back, it probably was about the bribe instead of her testifying. I think Ennis was killed because he was as you say "a loose canon" and they knew that Perry knew and may eventually prove it before a retrial (if there were to be one).

It absolutely was about the bribe. Pete made the snide comment about just having Paul Drake do it, and Perry said that this is one thing he couldn’t help him with, inferring because he was black there’s no way he’ll be able to convince a juror.

I liked a lot about this season, but hated the finale. So many unanswered (to dumb me, anyway) questions:
    • Where the heck did Charlie II come from?
    • Mom knows it‘s not Charlie - you think she‘d be concerned that another mother is suffering the grief she went through
    • Who paid off Ennis and his partner at the end? For what?
    • Why go through the charade right before killing Ennis?
    • Did Perry really instruct Paul to tamper with the jury?
    • Doesn‘t the defense go last?
    • In a mistrial, she‘s free to leave the area and go on the southern circuit of crazy revival tour?
    • I really don‘t get how Ennis was mixed up with the Baggerly extortion scheme. What was his connection to the church?
    • The church was being funded by Baggerly, but there was also a scene where they were counting a large amount of collection plate donations.
    • The hung jury - it really seemed like there was a ton of “reasonable doubt”
    • Checkov’s thread
And the wrap-up was just too fast. Like the black policeman who became Perry’s private eye; I would have liked to see more of that transition than a welcome home party and an “I quit.”

Still enjoyed it and it was great to have something new, and weekly (to prevent the 2 day binge). Now it’s back to Hulu’s deep cuts I guess.
