Queen of the South reunion! Not only Camila, but Pote. Rigoberto, the guard at the entry to the airport, was played by Hemky Madera, "Pote" in QotS. I'd recognize that gravelly voice anywhere (and I barely hear).

I thought it was okay. Kind of a slow start, didn't really grab me yet, but enough there to keep watching. Potential.

I did not care for this 1st episode at all. I'll wait for Tatiana Maslany to make her 1st appearance. Then decide if I'll continue.

Well the second episode picked up a lot the second half of the hour. I'm in!

Tatiana Maslany is taking it easy and plays only one character. Natalie Dormier, on the other hand, plays that character and three others as well in the other show. Tatania's version of Aimee Semple McPherson has a better relationship with her mother, but only has a suggestion of supernatural powers, she is not actually a goddess.

It bothers me that they reconned Mason's character into the Army, since as we all know from the books he was in the Navy.

I was excited to see the Alligator Farm come up. When I was a kid that was my favorite amusement park in LA, much better than Disney Land or Knott's Berry Farm.

Good episode. Not only a good character study, but an interesting mystery.

I have no idea what any of this means.

    Well... not all of us.

He's comparing Perry Mason with Penny Dreadful: City of Angels, another pre-war show featuring a female evangelist inspired by Aimee Semple McPherson (although she's is one of the few female characters on that show NOT played by Natalie Dormer!).

That could work, but it will make him and Della pretty old when he's a lawyer. I wonder if they'll show us how that happens or not if the series goes six seasons and a movie.

Don't forget that Tatiana Maslany has had a great deal of experience playing multiple roles from Orphan Black which I'm sure added to @ej42137 making the comment, I think she's probably happy to only play one character :)

Could not agree more. This is some TeeVee at its finest. Ryhs & Lithgow are hitting it out of the park (as well as Juliet Rylance).

I think you're overthinking this. 98% of current viewers have no idea what the back-story of Perry Mason is, other than it was a TV series from half a century ago. The writers are working towards an interesting story. They're not ret-conning anything, or worried about what those 42 people who actually watched it on TV (or read the books) might think.

    She can orate!

I'm beginning to think that if she works hard enough, she might just have a future in this business...

I got curious so I read the Perry Mason Wiki and it states:
The television series contains some hints of what Mason did in the past. In The Case of the Misguided Missile, he says that he served in the Navy on Ulithi atoll during WWII.

Maybe this is the Perry Mason of the books/TV’s Father :)
Or maybe this was a way for the show to get noticed. ;)

Either way, it’s another good HBO show with a great cast

    Enjoy!

That's my take on this. I barely remember the Perry Mason series (It's on MeTV if anyone wants to watch), but I'm watching this as more of a Raymond Chandler type series than Perry Mason. I like this type of 1920s-1930s film noir type story.

And Della Reese's Street's mother? And Paul Drake's father? And perhaps Hamilton Burger's gay namesake uncle?

Either they couldn't get rights to Mickey Spillane, or they tested the names for interest and found Perry Mason got more people's attention. I don't think I'd have sampled yet another MS remake, but somehow PM sparked my curiosity. Even though the character is much more the former than the latter.
