never saw this actress before but she's 'goofy' and seems to be trying too hard. I know they are trying to copy the documentary camera angle thing but not too many spinoffs can follow as well as an original. Plus the going into the pit was attempting to be mike scott-ish but i didnt think it was 'legit'

it will be on the back burner as something to watch in the morning before work but they will need to liven it up a bit

I think Parks and Rec will fail because it is trying waaaay to hard to be like the Office. Even the main character comes off as a female Michael Scott.

I'm not sure why there's so many negative comments about the show being like The Office since The Office is a good show. So what if the main character is kinda like a woman Michael Scott? I see this more as the producers starting with something they know, and soon the show will take on a life of its own. Just like how The Office started from the UK version and it's now something completely different.

I see great potential for something unique out of this show. The main boss guy who's head of the "Parks and Recreation Department" who doesn't want to build any parks, and the woman who pushes him into it. Lots of "antics" while building the park, and maybe some good character growth after they see what the result of the park is. I'm looking forward to more episodes even if they are similar to The Office initially.

For me, I expect the pilot to be one of the best episodes. It's like purchasing a big ticket item - if the pre-sales experience sucks, how you can expect the post-sales experience to be better?

I didn't think Parks & Rec was worth wasting another hour of my time.

I understand but there are many times when, for whatever reason (studio interference, budgetary reasons, casting issues, et al), the pilot winds up being less than indicative of the series as a whole.

    Not always but sometimes.

Something that has bothered me about the introduction of this show is:

(all spoilers related to previews of the show shown before the pilot aired)

We know what happens. We know they build a park on the land. Because almost all of the promos for the show involved her strutting around the new park that she built. It sort of takes away from the fun of the first few episodes since we know she's going to be successful.

I thought it was okay. I've never been a big fan of Poehler so that didn't help. I'm not a SP-deleter, though, so it'll keep recording and if I get around to it, I'll watch. I have hundreds of hours of backlog, though, so I'm not holding my breath!

Talk about damning with faint praise! That's one SP I did delete, halfway through the first show.

Interesting point. If you were one of my kids I would keep putting it on your plate and odds are you'd eventually come around, but I wouldn't make you eat it. ;)

What? No! Definitely one of my top five.

    Not necessarily....
The previews were not necessarily showing the new park that she built. She was in a park at the beginning of this episode already (the drunk in the slide, and her questioning the little girl on How Much Fun she was having). The previews could be for a different park, like the one in the first part of the episode.

But yes, it's a bit confusing since her boss said he didn't want any parks, so I'm not sure where they were at the beginning of the episode if they weren't supposed to already have a park.

If there are any spoilers there, they're very minor. You can't even really tell what's going on in any of them. :D

I'm handicapped by the fact that there are trees in the way, plus my apartment isn't high enough to see much of the actual pit. (The lot has a security guard on duty 24/7, so I'm a little reluctant to go across the street with a camera in hand, even though I'd be taking photos from a public sidewalk.) Plus they've been doing much of the filming on weekday mornings and early afternoons, while I'm at work.

That's about how far we got. Sometimes a pilot is not funny, but you can see where it would be and maybe stick it out. There were a couple of shows this season like that. Gary Unnmarried was one. When 30 Rock started it was the same thing. You could see the potentional was there. With this one, after the first act, wife and I looked at each other and both said, this is stupid. After the second act, we both didn't even smile once and deleted the SP.

Agreed. Could not even finish the show and deleted my season pass. What is with all the dead air between lines?

LOL! What a brilliant explanation/metaphor for different "tastes" in entertainment.:up:

BTW, I like sauerkraut, and will give P&R a couple of more tries.

Sauerkraut is always going to taste the same. A new TV show can improve over time as it develops and grows legs. I wouldn't eat sauerkraut if it grew legs.

We deleted our SP this afternoon. It's like some desperate execs at NBC said, "So, The Office is actually pretty successful! Let's figure out some way we can duplicate its success." The problem is, they just ended up trying to duplicate the show. The intro feel is similar (even the jingle at the end of the theme), Amy's character is basically Michael Scott right down to the same naive verbal slips and whatnot, and it has the same "documentary" camera style. I went into it with a fresh and open mind, not even thinking anything about The Office, but for my wife and I it's just ended up being a blatant copycat show - except it's not funny.

    Oh NBC... :(
