    It was a mini-Unicorn, duh ;)
It was simply her pet- don't think there is any significance otherwise.

Yeah I'm pretty sure it was a unicorn, too. :)

I think the only significance was whatever the Evil Queen said about love screwing you over or whatever when she went over there to protect it. She tried to save her pet and moved right underneath the chandelier thing that the Queen used to trap her with.

Can you guys watching in HD actually see what's going on in the dark scenes? I'm forced into watching in SD, and I can barely see what's going on. The fight by the fireplace was just a lot of fire to me. :(

I've got an HDTV and don't remember having issues with anything being too dark. I do have a Pioneer Kuro plasma, which has excellent blacks. Maybe your HDTV just blows. :)

It looks fine to me in HD.

No issues for me in HD either.

Sounds like you might want to calibrate your TV.

Oh yeah, Snow White, not Cinderella. I got them mixed up. I was just confused when Maleficent got all defensive over whatever that pet was. Was it something we should have known about?

That was a unicorn? It looked like a donkey to me. A donkey that seemed to appear out of nowhere out of plot convenience. A....Deus Ex Donkeyna, even.

Well, it had a horn on its forehead, so that's why I assumed it was a unicorn.

As for appearing out of nowhere, I am not sure how you get that. Sure it's the first time we've seen the pet... but it was also the first flashback we saw with Maleficent.

Unless you mean it appeared out of nowhere during the magic fighting scene? In that case, no it did not appear out of nowhere, it was sitting next to Maleficent's chair the whole time... she even made a reference to it while they were chatting.

They spoke about the Donkey being her pet like 30 seconds earlier. I guess most people that like their pets would defend them. If someone pointed a gun at one of my dogs and I had a bullet proof shield, I'd stand in front of my dog to defend it.

I not only watched it in SD, but on an ancient and grainy RPTV and I still saw the Unicorn.

I just bought some honey crisp apples this week, so I noticed that too.

The Unicorn (which still looked like a donkey with a horn, but it might have been a mini-horse) was in the "Establishing Shot" of the Evil Queen/Maleficent scene, it was to Maleficent's left. The point was that EQ thinks that love is weakness, but to power the curse she needed to love SOMEthing.

The scenes in Maleficent's castle were a little on the dark side, more so on the Sharp Aquos in the man cave than the main TV (46" LG LCD).

Regina doesn't seem to remember that fairy tale world at all but Mr Gold clearly does. Since he created the curse in the first place I'm wondering if he left the equivalent of a "programmer's back door" in it when he traded it to EQ

@Iaria -- I know what you mean about the apples, I was bugged by an episode of White Collar where they set up a Fake OTB and then proceeded to show clips of European races while saying it was "Finger Lakes" (a real race track in upstate New York).

I will still give this a try but I hope the plot goes somewhere.
BTW, why didn't Emma get arrested for the actual felony she did, cutting down the red delicious apple tree?

The Sheriff would like for the pissing match not to continue to escalate. He is the voice of reason to the EQ, much as the Woodsman worked for her up to a point but did know when to say no if things went too far.

And she only half cut it down.
    I'd have leveled the thing.

I found this episode to be a snoozer. I'm having a hard time caring about the characters in EITHER world. The show needs to lighten up or become much darker. As it is, it is taking itself really seriously but has no reason to do so because the plots are mundane and boring so far. I really hope it picks up in quality or figures out a more appropriate pace and tone. One or two more episodes like these first two and I'm out.

Just to follow up on this, since nobody else has: the second episode's ratings were almost identical to the first (4.0 vs. 3.9 for adults 18-49). That's a great sign for fans of this show and for ABC.

Any idea where the first episode ranked? Was it in the top 20 or 30 shows?

The premiere ranked #11 in adults 18-49 for the week ending Sunday, October 23. That includes two World Series games that ranked above it, but there were also several shows in reruns that week. It was the 6th highest rated scripted show for the week.

The second episode ranked #17 in adults 18-49 for the week ending Sunday, October 30. That's with three World Series games ahead of it and most shows airing new episodes. It was the 10th highest rated scripted show for the week.
