My non tv watching boss asked me if I was one of those crazy's there was calling Obama and telling him not to pre-empt LOST. I didn't know what he was talking about. Now I do.

I much rather watch LOST than listen to another politician spout off a bunch of crap for an hour.

While I agree that watching the opening of Lost is high on my list, a standing President of the US has the right to broadcast his/her SOTU address whenever they feel like it. Lost fans need to suck it up.

Wow... is it SoTU time again already?

2009 just flew by! Am I the only one who feels that way?

ABC would also be well within their rights not to broadcast the SOTU if they chose.

I thought the SotU had to be delivered on Jan. 20th. Is this not so?

No, that's the start date of the Presidential term.

The Constitutional requirement for the State of the Union is "[The President] He shall from time to time give to the Congress Information of the State of the Union". (Article 2, Section 3)

That's it. No date, no interval, no minimum requirements, nothing.

That it happens every year is only a recent (several decades) tradition, I believe.

And that it happens toward the beginning of the year and on a Tuesday are also just traditions. There is no reason it couldn't be on Wednesday, Feb. 3rd, or Tuesday, Feb. 9th or Friday, July 23rd.

The White House won't confirm the date of the State of the Union, but Robert Gibbs confirmed that it won't be the same night as LOST.

And the SOTU doesn't even have to be a speech. Constitutionally speaking, he can deliver the SOTU in writing if he wants to. Not that he, or any President since the invention of television, ever would.

Problem is, his quote doesn't seem to take into account that LOST is starting on Tuesday, Feb. 2, but will air every Tuesday thereafter until the end of May. Either the WH needs to get their butt in gear and hold the SOTU on Tuesday, Jan. 26 or hold it on a night other than Tuesday if they want to keep that promise.

On the night of the premiere, LOST is 3 hours long (a recap hour and a two hour episode). On the other nights, it's only an hour long (until the finale).

If Obama gave the SoTU during the Lost premiere, would that make Republicans "the others"? :D

Obama as Jack or as Ben or maybe Richard?

Obama approaches the pedestal. Looks in to the cameras.

    "My fellow Americans.....Waaaaaaaaalt!!"

You know that's not going to help. After the premiere, LOST will air Tuesday nights at 9pm EST. Remind me again - what time are all the President's prime-time speeches? Oh yeah, that's right. They're almost always at 9 pm EST.

On one site I read, it claims that the two dates that were being discussed were Jan. 26 and Feb. 2, so if that's true, then we won't have to worry about it.

The Republicans are the Dharma Initiative. Obama is Ben. The rest of us are the flight 815ers.

Or, Obama pretends he's John Locke but he's really Sayid.

ABC can easily move an episode of LOST to 8 ET for one night and pre-empt whatever's usually there. They could also move it to 10 if they're willing to run past 11 if Obama goes over an hour.

If they pick the 26th, they're conflicting with American Idol. Yes, that's on Fox and they have declined to air Obama speeches before. But not the SOTU (although he's never given a SOTU before).

(That and they want to wait until health care reform is passed/signed, which might not happen by the 26th.)
