As stated above...SD on plasma may never look as good as on other tvs so the OP may be fighting a losing battle. That's why i bought a CRT RPTV. I knew the SD would likely be the best on a crt. And given the lack of HD content thru Directv, I'm very happy I did get crt. Even the SD pic from my T60 looks decent. The SD from my HDtivo definitely looks better than the T60 when I'm set at 1080i. Probably because my tv is native 1080i i guess, but never figured out why. But even my wife notices when i forget to turn 480i back to 1080 after doing some DVD burns.

since some tvs have a native rez of 720, and if you are watching 480 from your standard receiver, the tv has to upconvert to 720 and it may look bad.

I hate to say get a HDtivo just to improve SD, but it definitely has been better for me in my particular situation

The operative word in this is MAY look better or worse. It depends on a lot of different things Signal Source, Screen Size, viewing distance, Electronics doing upconverting, Which connections are used, room that this is in. A lot of this is more art than science because one of the variables is person preferences. What looks good to me may not look good to you. The point is that you can only take a review so far then you have to actually see the equipment operate under the conditions (or similar conditions) that it will ultimately be used. Best advice is to check on the return policy before you buy.

Bottom line question here. If DirecTV supplies 480i...will switching from COAX to S-Video from my TiVo to the plasma actually make a difference?

WOW, I need to keep reading. You folks have great info. For what it's worth. I really like this LG Television. It really is nice and it is getting better daily. I recently read that it takes a little while to get "bedded down". I am in the military and HD is not an option today as I will be moving very soon. Perhaps my new cable company will be a better deal than DirecTV. All that being said, the LG company is sort of the new comer on the scene and I'm impressed so far.

I'd say S vid would help. I can say that there's definitely a difference between S vid and RCA cables on my setup. I did extensive testing thru my DVD burner when i was setting it up.
