I put a second disk drive in my Tivo 2 and it emits an annoying "surging" sound with a phase of about one second. It's just loud enough to drive one crazy if you're in the same room and there's nothing else making noise. I didn't use any mounting brackets for the second drive, so that might be worth investing in. But before I placed the order, I thought I'd ask if there's anything else I might try.

It sounds bad. Did you prep it for use in the tivo?

yes, TiVo making bad sounding noises after a HDD upgrade is not good.

first off a little more info on your setup would help.

    How old is the TiVo?

How old is the "new" 2nd HardDrive?

What is the 2nd drives specs?

What process was used to install the second drive?

You might be having a problem where the Power supply for the TiVo cannot handle the extra load that the new drive is causing.

Also since you have to go through a software drive configuration to add a second drive, I would suggest that you just add a single larger drive, that way you leave out the possible power supply problem and the problem that adding a second drive means that now you have twice the chances that your TiVo will die.

When either of the two drives fail, then your TiVo will stop working and you will loose all your settings and programming, etc.

    hope this helps.
