OK, so who do I ask for help on this? Like I said I'm a novice, and am not sure what to do a google search for. But those guys are expensive no?

Do you have any friends who know some stuff about computers and networking that could help you out? It would be a lot cheaper to buy a friend some pizza and a few beers than have a "professional" come out.

LOL, you know, as scary as it sounds I'm the friend who helps the folks out. So, can I hook the broad band modem to the router, and then hook the router to the switch?

That would be the way to start, yeah.

    Good luck!

Well, that worked. I didn't realize it would set everything for the switch also.
    Thanks for all the help.

Yes. Get a router--they are less than $50. Then you can use the ports on that to connect to the switch or directly to your computer (or both). Looks like this:

Cable-->Cable Modem-->Router-->Switch-->computer, tivo, other network devices.

The router will get an IP address from the cable modem/service and will be something like 67.xxx.xxx.xxx. Internally, depending on the router, your computer, tivo and others will have IP addresses that are 192.168.1.1, .2, .3, and so forth.
