On a Roamio last night we were watching a recorded show. When it finished I pressed the "Live TV" button and had a completely black screen with no sound. Switched channels a few times with no difference. Tried a different Tivo and everything was fine, so I know I was getting a signal into the house.

I went to soft reboot and when I clicked on Restart I got a spinning blue circle. That lasted about 60 seconds and it froze. Then about 30 seconds later the box restarted on its own and returned to normal. Note that when I clicked on "restart" I never got the message to press thumbs down twice. It just rebooted on its own after the freeze.

I've been around computers long enough to know that stuff happens, but I was wondering if anyone else has had a similar experience and, if so, was it an indication of a failing drive or just a one-off anomaly.

I used to get a spontaneous reboot every few months too. Then a few years ago I started a procedure where on the last day of the month (like today) I power cycle everything. I mean from TV to Stream. I also use the quiet time to dust & clean. There are five UPS throughout the house. They are powered down. Since doing this things have been wonderfully boring.

Hey Joe - My initial impression is also a one-off, but just wanted to hear from others. I dust all my computers every 6 months, but have never done so with Tivo's. Having had to replace drives & power supplies (and a fan) in my various Tivo's over the years I've never seen any dust buildup, so I'm not concerned with that. As for power cycling I don't think it's a bad idea if that works for you, but I'm old school and prefer not to subject my equipment to cold starts more than necessary (that's when the electronics are subjected to the most stress). Just a matter of preference.

    Thanks for the reply :).

No problem. Temperature changes are very stressful. I've already finished my restart, so down time is under 30 minutes. I have this procedure down to a logical process. The longest delay is waiting to my modem to get running.

I found that sometimes when a TiVo gets too busy to respond, but is still alive, I usually wait for it to finish what it's doing. I think repeatedly pushing buttons makes it mad and that causes a restart.
