Being Newegg the drive will arrive DOA and be worth $0, but it will cost you $20 to send it back.

I'm beating a dead horse, but I gave up long ago buying hard drives from NewEgg. As of the last time I checked, they still won't promise to pack drives properly for shipment.

If I were a drive manufacturer, I'd look into threatening NewEgg that their shoddy packing voids the drive warranty.

    YMMV

That's odd. I've never had the problem. The ones I've gotten were always in the standard little cardboard box with black plastic holders at each end. No DOAs either. Guess I'm one of the luck ones.

You take your chances. I've ordered 40-50 drives from Newegg and have had no DOA. There were one or two with shoddy packaging, but the packing definitely varies.

The two single drives I bought this past month were both very well packed. in custom "pocket" bubble wrap in a custom sized UPS box. Very well done.

I've ordered multiple drives, both as multiple drives per order as well as single drives, from NewEgg and only had one DOA drive.

Anyone that orders any drive from any vendor should always check the entire drive from beginning to end before putting it into a production environment. I did this with the five WD RE4 drives in my NAS, putting them into an external enclosure and run through all the tests in order on the drive. If it passed, it went into production, if it failed, it was swapped out.

You always test a drive completely before putting it to work. I'd do this with any drive from any vendor, especially NewEgg.

Well I just bought a 4TB WD AV-GPfrom new egg to put in my new roamio.
I've been buying from newegg for years and have good success.

I figured it would be trival -- its not.

Do I have to do anything "special" to the drive before I put it in the tivo
(it detects it, starts to format, says it will take up to 3 hours, then instantly goes into a "start" screen (push select to start) -- interspersing some other screens in between (its going into an infinite loop)

BTW -- the basic roamio has a 500G seagate drive -- the power draw on the WD-AV is much higher rated than the seagate (5V/12V) but I've seen all the WD-AV have the same required capacity.

(BTW, I know Linux inside out).

yes, you have to subtract 1TB. ;) The largest drive that works in the Roamio is 3TB(except for Weaknees, who've cracked the code apparently).

I use these in many many tivo upgrades. Ive always wondered how they would do in a Raid config for streaming BD rips.

Good. Then set up a dedicated home server running Ubuntu and put the 4TB drive in it. Transfer content from your Roamio.

The link seems to be working OK right now. The way the PROMO CODE works is that you add the item to the cart at the full price. When it takes you to the next page you will see a box at the lower left to enter the CODE.

It will then tell you that you have to enter you email then you will be able to enter the CODE. By entering your email you will then receive emails with current promotions. You can always opt out later if you don't want the promotions.
