Drew Carey to Replace Barker on 'Price'
NEW YORK (AP) - Genial comic Drew Carey was tapped Monday to replace silver-haired legend Bob Barker on the CBS daytime game show "The Price is Right." Carey confirmed the deal during a taping of the "Late Show" with David Letterman.
The selection attracted more attention than usual for a daytime show because of the prospect of replacing Barker, 83. Barker retired after 35 years in the job last month following taping of his 6,586th episode.
The opening attracted widespread interest, including from comic Rosie O'Donnell after she left "The View."
arey, 49, spent a decade on his own ABC sitcom and also was host of the game show "Whose Line is It Anyway?," a comic improvisational show.
He will also be host of a new CBS prime-time game show, "The Power of 10," that will air first next month. He told The Associated Press that CBS officials first contacted him about "The Price is Right" immediately after he completed a pilot of the other game show this spring.
It's not Rosie, and that's really all that matters.
Haha. I have always liked Drew Carey, but it does seem a bit of weird fit.
Does he not have another game show working in primetime as well?
He made so much money off The Drew Carey Show, seems like he could just relax, so clearly he is doing this stuff because he wants to do it.
What was the purpose of that?
For the first time...I'm going to have to Tivo TPIR.
I just gotta see what Drew Carey can do with it.
Likely the result of a thread merge... that was a link to the other thread that is now a part of this thread.
I'll probably Tivo the first few episodes just to see what it's like, but I doubt that it'll rate a Season Pass without Bob.
Yeah, I thought of that...after I posted.
You mean it rated a SP with Bob?
I never got into game shows enough to SP them, but maybe DC can change that.
Hmmmmmm - Same network that his former co-star Craig Ferguson works on - Did this happen by accident? I think not!
Eh. Definately better than Rosie, but he was always a repetitive nervous annoyance on Whose Line. I don't see him handling the most popular game show in history all that well...
Not a bad choice..should be fun to watch.
Nothing will EVER replace Bob completely, but Drew is a good choice for a replacement IMO.
He should do well on the show.
That makes me happy! I had heard rumors of Rosie O'donnell..... NO!
I'm sure this will be all over the local news tonight...Cleveland boy replaces a legend, that sort of thing.
I'm not a huge Drew Carey fan, but he looks like he'd be a good choice for this gig.
eh.... I'd rather have a new/unknown in there.
No, that's a different game show.
Wouldn't it be better to have gracefully ended the show with Bob's departure?
I assume it still makes them bank and that is why it will continue, but I don't think I have personally watched the show in 20 years.
Sure as a kid growing up in the summer or home sick (cough, cough), I would watch it because there was NOTHING else on. Doesn't mean it was a bad show... but it is amazing it has gone on this long.
I suspect they used the hosting search/job as a way to create some buzz and interest as with 500 channels I doubt a lot of people who watch TV now have ever seen the Price is Right.
