Do all Tivo remotes work all boxes? Can I use a programable remote which is recommended?
In IR mode, yes, the remotes are generally compatible (except for the Sony remotes, I believe). You can also use a universal IR remote or a "remote control solutions" thing like a Harmony to control the TiVo, again via IR.
You’ve posted to the Premiere forum, so you’d only need IR functionality, unless you’ve upgraded to an RF remote (with a USB dongle), at some point.
If you’d like to stick with a TiVo peanut-style remote, I’d recommend upgrading to an RF remote (also capable of IR) to get the newer button layout; and a cheap option for doing so is grabbing one of these RCN remotes, $10 shipped via eBay. (addl)
Yes, that is a good deal Using the RF remote in IR mode with a Premiere, does the "back" button function same as with Roamio or Bolt?
Good, thanks. I got a couple of the RCN RF remotes, great deal. Will be interesting to see what the "on demand" button does if anything with a Tivo branded box.
At least in my case, as a Comcast customer, the 'On Demand' button launches the Xfinity for TiVo On Demand app. Nice.
Got the remotes. Holy smokes, I think they are new, what a deal. And yep, the On Demand button brings up Comcast On Demand even though it's an RCN remote. Will be using for Premieres so put into IR mode. Man, if anyone needs one and if that person has any left grab one (or two), even included batteries.
I wiped the RCN logo as well.
I either used acetone or brake cleaner. Just go light or you can smear the logo into the finish.
Doesn't that leave the finish flat in that spot? To me, that makes it just as noticeable as the logo was.
It was matte finish already. Much nicer with it being black than white, IMO.
Replying to my own post but one final update. In IR mode being used for a Premiere the Zoom does not function correctly. It brings up a partial information bar at the bottom of the screen instead of changing zoom. Probably all RF remotes would do this if used with a Premiere, not just the RCN?
Since a Premiere doesn't support RF without a dongle, it will drop into IR mode. Any TiVo remote in RF mode will change to IR mode if it can't find a TiVo.
I have two Roamios in the same room as the Premiere so set the RF to IR manually. Also needed to set a remote # as I have another Premiere and an S3 in that room also Lot of Tivos/remotes in that room!!
I'm lazy. In my room the Roamio units have black wood faceplates to block the IR. The Premiere is usually powered off also.
