So I've been watching the cleaned up and FX enhanced version of Star Trek:TOS. I'm being reminded how hokey some of that series was, but I do have to say that the updated FX do flow really well. Except for one place: The Clock.

A couple of episodes (The Corbomite Manuever being one) have a countdown clock that the camera "cuts" to on occasion. In the original broadcast, the clock had numbers printed on cylinders like many clocks from the 60's and 70's had. Since these shots were always just of the clock, they were easy to replace. But the way they did it is just odd. Instead of just cleaning up the shot, or replacing the clock with something a little less archaic, they show the clock on what appears to be a screen, but with the numbers rotating as they did on the older version of the clock. Not only is it a strange way to pay homage to the original shot, but it's really fake looking.

So that's my gripe for the day.

Does it feel better getting that off your chest?

My chest feels better; now I gotta get something off my gut. Nothing some fiber shouldn't take care of.

If this is the only thing you can find to criticize about taking classic Star Trek and doing a George Lucas to it, I'd say you are doing very good.

I've never seen a single episode of the "enhanced" version and I know it was a bad idea from the start. You comments just confirm it.

Sorry for how dumb this is, but how can I tell when an episode has been TOS? I'd like to set my recorder to grab them. Thanks.

    Laurel,...
TOS means from The Original Series. Do you mean you want to record the cleaned up versions?

I just checked the recording of "The Corbomite Maneuver".

    Look more closely.

The numbers on the new clock don't "rotate", they sort of "quick dissolve" one to the next. They've sort of made it look like the numbers are a kind of bit-mapped display. They definitely don't "rotate".

That being said, the "look" of the new clock is still kind of archaic/60's. But... they were under a directive to not drastically change the look of the show, just clean up the effects. Ergo, they didn't change the look of the clock much.

No way is what Paramount is doing "Lucasing" Trek. I think it's great.

I'd agree. They haven't really changed the content--just updated the FX and cleaned the image a lot. And most of the time, the new FX flow really well...if it weren't for that darn clock...

"New" remastered episodes resume this weekend with "The Galileo Seven". Startrek.com has some preview images up.
