I may be in the market for a pair of those devices that let you place a remote phone jack wherever you have an AC outlet. You know... one goes by an existing phone jack, then you put the other one where you need a phone jack, and the devices use the power line to carry the phone signal. They are often used with older TiVo units to provide modem connectivity.

My question? I can't come up with a sufficiently succinct search phrase to look for these online! What is the specific generic name for these? Or more importantly, what are the descriptive terms used by eBayers and other online sellers of these?

    Thanks!!

The operative keywords seem to be wireless+phone+jack

    Thanks for this!

Be advised, those things might be okay to put a phone jack where your TiVo is for the daily call for guide data, and for an actual telephone, but if you use it to hook up a modem to connect to an ISP, the best speed you'll get is about that of a 28.8 modem.

You might find one cheap at places like BigLots.

You could also just use a "wireless bridge" if you already have WiFi in your house (or even if you don't).

Really, esp. if you go searching, the total price could be close to the price for those phone extenders.. up to about $60 at most (two cheapo WiFi routers).

Then you'll also be able to do Internet downloads of schedule data & Netflix streaming on capable Tivos, downloads of podcasts, etc..

Agreed. Look at something like a Dlink DAP-1522 if you already have a wireless router.

Uhh, that's way too expensive.. that's twice what I said would be the *high* end (I was mentioning $60 if you DIDN'T already have a router -- so for two).

Why does it say that it's wireless? I thought it was using the power lines to send the signal?
